Hi There

I am looking to get back into 40k after a while of not playing, however I am struggling to decide on which army to pick and get excited about. So I thought I would list what I am looking for in an army so that I can bounce ideas off of the good people here at Dakka Dakka..

- I quite like regimented type armies that present in an organised way on the table.

- I quite like themed armies that can have a back-story.

- I am highly suspicious of the imperium, although I think chaos is the greater evil.

- Cost is a factor so maybe a lower model count army would be better. I need to buy everything from scratch including all the paints.

- The army doesn’t have to be considered ‘good’ by playing standards; I will only be playing over a few beers to have some fun, so nothing serious.

- On the subject of ‘fun’ I also like to bring something a bit different to the table so that not only I can enjoy the game, but also my opponent.

None of these requirements are set in stone, just factors that I think about when looking at the various factions, so can you help?

Cheers

Well, based on your consideration I would consider Guard or Necrons.

Guard are probably the most 'organized' on the table top, with different formations and units having their own command structure with their own series of orders, and depending on your build can have low model count armies.

Necrons probably look the most regimented (their units are all variations on the same dudes basically) and are a bit different, emphasizing durability over power.

Have you considered Farsight Enclave?

Regimented troop gunline and suits to mix.

Please note, for those of you who play Chaos Daemons as a faction the term "Daemon" is potentially offensive. Instead, please play codex "Chaos: Mortally Challenged". Thank you.

Thanks. I love Guard but the major problem I have is that they would need me to sink a lot of time and money into them, neither of which I have in abundance at the moment unfortunately.

Farsight Enclave I haven't considered, I will have to go and have a look at them, cheers.

For low model count and not really seen, Grey Knights have that going for them. Not many paints needed either.

Grey Knights are a good shout, unfortunately one of the gamers in our group does them so I'd like something a little different. Cheers though.

guard don't have to be expensive. You can field an 1850 list with four models.

Go for eldar - you can make a surprising gunline with their various artillery, night spinners, dark reapers, Rangers etc. The whole eldar lifestyle is regimented, and as long as you aren't spamming scatbikes/wraithknights they can be fun to play against.

The only issue is that you need a lot of paints for the different aspects, so pick wisely!

Eldar are good, so you can make just about anything work in the codex. By avoiding the tournament cheese builds you'll be playing something fun and different.

Three Baneblades with sponsons, one with an extra set of sponsons, and one Enginseer (filling out the Emperor's Fury Superheavy Tank Company formation datasheet) with meltabombs for 1820. Add in three more models (Servitors) for 1850 for a guaranteed repair.

Surprisingly enough, Harlequins actually meet all of those requirements.

As a Necron player that is starting his second army which happen to be guard, I say this. 3rd party miniature companies. There is already a huge variation of regiments of guard officially. I've bought a few GW models but the majority of my guard are third party proxy. As long as your opponent's are okay with that I mean. Just my 2 cents. I just bought a box of 80 miniatures for $40. If I had bought GW that would have cost me $29 per 10 models... well over $40. Same goes for tanks. Just make sure you buy the proper size.

Being highly suspicious of the imperium takes me to suggest the Inquisition.

You can run an inquisitor with drafted in elements from other IoM armies.

or Skitari / Admech.
