My attempt to place highly in a GT with a majority-guard list continues...

This is another revision of my GT list for an ETC style tournament. This would give my conscript death-blobs some punch against walkers and knights, the power to hit-and-run out of combat, and reliable psychic nastiness that marines do so well. I had a culexus in place of the libconclave before, but I feel that this would be stronger against more opponents, and a lone culexus could easily be killed if it was a problem.

The ravenwing bikers will outflank and the speeders will deep strike (ideally near servo skulls). I quite like the idea of doing a little summoning. Should be good to raise some daemonettes and flesh hounds upfield near the advancing blobs. If I get possession, a bloodthirster would be fun too. I feel this has a lot of synergy, and the conclave should allow some tailoring to opponents by picking psychic powers.

Would this be a good/bad matchup for you in a tournament. If so, why?

It's interesting and it would confuse people at first but tbh at 4 sources you'll be up against the most broken stuff you can think of. My advice would be drop one platoon in favour of veterans, drop and put all your eggs in one basket, drop the inquisition and take more Libby's and fish for invis, then drop the ravenwing and take a dark angel cad for azrael to give the blob a 4++. It'll look something like

Libby
2 x 5 scouts
Azrael (warlord)

5 Libby's

C command squad, MoO
3 p psykers
2 priests

Platoon command, mortar
50 guardsmen
50 conscripts

2 wyverns (one squad)

Yes the IG becomes an allied detachment but it's still the bulk of your army, with 2 big blobs you can put all of your characters into one blob or split them across the 2, keep your opponent thinking.

Which event are you going to?

Thanks for the input. Was planning on going to the UKGT Yeah, 4 different sources is hardly ideal, and not as aesthetic to my mind. The marines are all painted in one style and the guard and inquisition in a different one, so the force still looks fairly cohesive.

I do see loads of psykers in top tournament death stars, but are so many really needed? 4 rolls on telepathy should give me a reasonable chance at invisibility or shrouding to help keep the conscripts alive. I don't think Azrael is worth the investment personally. If he's included in my original list in the unit with conclave/conscripts/priest, then I'm paying 200+pts for a 4++ to protect a 400pt unit. Just seems a bit steep to me!

Regarding the platoons:
50 guardsmen = 250pts
20 guardsmen and 50 conscripts = 250pts. I'd rather have 20 extra bodies in the backfield!

With those changes, I'd lose 50 guardsmen, 4 autocannons, 2 lascannons, 4 dangerous backfield MSU units toting grav and melta, a techmarine on bike, a wyvern, a re-roll to seize/prevent seize and infiltrate/scout-denying servo skulls.

I'd gain 10 scouts, some more fighting power in the blobs (that'd mainly be good against infantry), a stock 4++ save in one blob, and around 12 mastery levels (which would be also helpful for denying the witch). What would be your plan with all the extra psychic power? I've never used a psyker heavy army before.

Ah cool the ukgt which heat? I'm think in going to heat 5 myself.

4 rolls isn't enough for invis to guarantee it every game, even if you just have shrouding there's so much ignores cover nowadays. If you don't take azrael look into taking cypher instead, but if you do take cypher you can't take any dark angels so you'll have to take a vanilla marine Libby conclave and drop te ravenwing bikes. A lot of it is your preference obviously. Perhaps look into a vanilla conclave with tiggy in so he can re roll which powers he knows. You've got a few options. I don't know what models you have access to but look into taking the psykana division if you have the models, great for summoning daemons.

Oh in that case I guess I'll see you there then! I'll hopefully be attending that one too Should be good, not ever been to a competitive GT before, and not sure 7th edition is the best place to start haha. Still looking forward to it though!

Ooo exciting stuff then, I'm keeping my list under lock and key until that weekend, it's nothing amazing and new it's just a nasty combo of 2 seperate ideas/armies.

Tbh mate don't let the idea of it being super competitive lists put you off. People obviously bring lists are meant to win there games, but in terms of player attitude towards the game that's where it stops, at the end of the day only one person can win everyone knows that, and people know everyone has also paid a lot for a weekend away of toy soldiers, doesn't even include the cost of the armies, so everyone wants everyone else to have a great fun weekend as well. These tournaments are ran by the players for te players which makes them really good as well. The boards aren't gw level amazing but what makes it great is being in a room of 40-100 people who are all like minded. Yeah before an event you build your list to win but when you get there you forget all about that. In my case I always end up drinking far too much.

Yeah - I think that's the best attitude. I'll play to win, but I'll have a good time whether I win lots or my guardsmen spend six games getting dissolved by scatter lasers and stomped flat by imperial knights

I'll probably not know anyone there, so feel free to say hi. Not 100% set on my list yet, but it'll probably be recognisable by over 100 guardsmen painted in white haha.
