So the other day my two friends played 40k one of my friends brought 2 Knights (oathsworn) an Ally detachment of space marines and a storm wing formation. He claims he can make his storm wing the warlord because he's taking it as his primary detachment. To me the list is unbound. Thoughts?

Edit: I changed the title to be a little more descriptive of the question, and am moving this to YMDC. --Janthkin

Were the Storm Wing and allied detachments of Space Marines from the same Chapter Tactic? Because I didn't think an Allied Detachment could be the same Chapter as the one it was allied to.

As far as I know, without my rulebook, I think he can declare his Storm Wing as the Primary, and the Warlord must be chosen from the Primary.

The Allied cannot be Primary, and the Knights are just as free to be chosen as Primary as the Storm Wing, IIRC.

Oathsworn detachment works like an allied one but with no obsec and as long as the space marine allies are different chapter tactics then yes what he was doing is perfectly acceptable and is a bound army

Would that mean you'd have to take out all the flyers in order to get slay the warlord? Also, to make my Warithknight a warlord I have to find something that says I can.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I also thought a warlord had to be a character/HQ. It doesn't make sense (to me) that a vehicle can be a warlord.

Anything can be the warlord. Only characters get warlord traits.

To get slay the warlord you have to kill the one flyer he selected to be their warlord as whilst they come in at the same time I believe they are still treated as separate units.

If there are no other legible units to be your warlord then a vehicle may be your warlord.

Also if you want a warlord wraith knight get the Llanden supplement as it allows a wraith knight to be your warlord

Anything can be Warlord.

Knights have Warlord traits, and are still a vehicle. Imperial Guard can have Tank Commanders, which are vehicles.

The only requisite is that it's the model with the highest Leadership. I'm not even sure if HQ factors into it. It's the model with the highest leadership, and in the case of a tie, it's down to you.

However, the entire formation isn't the Warlord. Just the model he elects.

Right, I have iyanden I was just saying that the supplement specifically states the Wraithknight can be my warlord and there is nothing in the storm wing that says it can be taken as your primary or that it can be your warlord.

Might be that the rule was different in 6th which was when Iyanden was made.

Also, none of the flyers have leadership profiles.

The issue is that he has no other units in his army which are allowed to be his warlord hence he must pick one which means the only units left is the storm talons and storm raven

OK, first this should be in YMDC, not Proposed Rules (not a big deal as a Mod can (and will) move it).
Second, in 6th edition your Warlord had to be the HQ model with the highest Leadership. Thus the reason, why Iyanden allowed Wraithknights and Wraithlords to be Warlords (they were both Heavy Support then).
In 7th edition, any Character, not part of a restricted Detachment (e.g. Allied Detachment) can be your Warlord. If you have no eligible Characters, any model can be chosen as your Warlord, but they do not get a Warlord Trait.
Iyanden has been updated, still allowing you take a Wraithknight as your Warlord, and it gains the (Character) type, allowing it a Warlord Trait.
Finally, you might want to think of a better thread title, as the current one (I have a friend that likes bending the rules) does not give any real information on what you are trying to find out.

All that said, no harm done, and everything is easily rectified.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

The Warlord must be a character model, unless specified otherwise or you do not have any character models in your army.

Both the Allied and Oathsworn Detachments cannot be the Primary Detachment, so yes, one of the models in the Storm Wing would have to have been the Warlord and the Storm Wing the Primary Detachment.

Slight correction, Iyanden has had an FAQ saying you can still use it, but has had virtually no changes other than that.

Iyanden was FAQ'd (at one point, think it is still up) that changes the wording for the paragraph allowing you to take a Wraithknight as your Warlord, to making a Wraithknight Warlord a "Jump Gargantuan Creature (Character)".

But, since there was an edition change in there that said you can take any character as the Warlord and not just an HQ character, iby saying (character) it still made sure you could take the Wraithlord as your warlord.
