Off the shoulder of Orion

Well, after far too long a hiatus, the Triskelion battle reports are back - the good news is we have another 3 reports done and ready to post over the next few weeks, along with 16 games completed (including city fight, boarding actions, kill teams and apoc). We haven't been idle, but the spare time has been used gaming and painting, rather than posting battle reports.

As always, the previous games can be found here:

Following the Battle for the Armouries stocks of promethium for many of the weapons were found to be completely depleted, as if no resupply had been received for some time.
No response has been received from the Catachan regiment garrisoning the promethium mines on the chem-world of Triskelion II. Inquisitor Torquemada and his retinue is despatched to investigate, picking up the remnants of fleet-based Space Marine Chapter Angels of Thunder along the way.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Torquemada led his band through the narrow defile as they approached the well-head for the main promethium mine of Triskelion II. The lack of contact from the garrison was disturbing, but not unexpected. Long had he suspected the hand of the Ruinous Powers laid over the system - the current events now unfolding only vindicated his suspicions.

Torquemada smelled heresy.

As the Lord Inquisitor of the sector conclave, he had called into service Inquisitor Luthor and the remnants of the once proud Angels of Thunder Chapter. The astartes had suffered grievous losses in recent decades and were now limited to a few veteran squads and commanders. Torquemada had impressed them all to his service - even depleted, they would no doubt prove more than enough to purge any deviants found having truck with the daemon, the witch or the heretic.

His vox bead chimed softly in his ear - the scouts reporting in:

"My Lord, objective sighted. Ab-human troops present in force. Your orders?"

Torquemada took a slow breath - yes, he had been right to suspect deviancy here. All would burn.

"All units" he voxed "advance and engage. Cleanse and purify!"

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

A promethium mine site, near the landing field. (The road is from the north, the mine is in the east, the lava river runs north-south)

Inquisitor [Torquemada] approaches the mine, with Angels of Thunder scouts leading the way.

These are not the Catachans they were expecting! Shots are fired.

The Inquisitor’s party and daemonhost deploys toward the mine…..

….and comes under fire from shadowy figures in the western woods (Fallen Dark Angel Scouts).

Turn two - Inquisitor Torquemada calls for reinforcements
An Angels of Thunder Tactical Squad deploys from the south, split into combat squads. They engage the woods.

An Angels of Thunder Veteran Squad deploys from the north, also in combat squads.

The corrupted Catachans are taking losses from the heavy bolter in the Angels of Thunder Scout squad, they call for their own reinforcements

Chaos Marines deploy at both ends of the river, Black Legion in the north and Iron Warriors in the south. A dreadnought accompanies them!

Turn three – more reserves arrive

An Angels of Thunder Terminator Squad led by a Librarian arrives in the north by deep strike, to engage the Black Legion squad there.

A second squad teleports adjacent to the mines, led by the Golden Captain of the Angels of Thunder himself. The entire remaining fighting strength of the Angels of Thunder is now on the field.

The Tactical Squad begin clearing out the western wood

The Inquisitor and his retinue take cover behind the rocky outcrops in centre table, while the Veteran combat teams run to the front.

A squad of Fallen take the field! Their shadowy leader moves with them through the rocks in the far west, behind the Angels of Thunder tactical squad.

Iron Warriors trade fire with the Inquisitor squad, while the dreadnought heads for the mine silos.

The Black Legion lose half their number for the loss of only one loyalist terminator.

The Catachan “devils” fire in desperation at the Golden Captain and his escort – and kill three of them!

Turn four – the Chaos Lord arrives

The Angels of Thunder tactical squad finishes up in the woods, but is taking losses from the Fallen behind them. Support from a Veteran combat team is on the way.

Inquisitor Torquemada and retinue continue to fire from the cover of the centre rocks

The Golden Captain and his last remaining escort charge the dreadnought and take it down.

Baalor the Horned himself and retinue arrives via foul sorcery

The Fallen avenge their Scouts, and wipe out the Angels of Thunder in the woods.

Turn five

How the battlefield looks at the start of the turn.

Having bested the Black Legion squad, the Librarian and his escort are now a long way from the action.

The second Angels of Thunder Veteran combat team fire on Lord Baalor, taking down one of his retinue.

The Golden Captain charges the remaining Catachan “devils”; the result is not unexpected.

Inquisitor Torquemada advances against the Iron Warriors….

…..but is savagely wounded in their return fire, and has to be carried from the field!

The Angels of Thunder first Veteran combat team advance firing on the Fallen squad, but are wiped out in the return fire.

The remaining Angels of Thunder scouts managed to take out one of Lord Baalor's retinue with the heavy bolter; in anger Baalor drops an orbital strike on them – which does no damage!

Yes, you - you’re lucky.

Chaos Lord vs Golden Captain – Lord Baalor the Horned makes his charge roll. The Angels of Thunder fail to do a wound, and are wiped out in return…….

With the Promethium firmly in Chaos hands, Inquisitor Torquemada seriously wounded, and the Angels of Thunder wiped out to a man, the battle is a resounding defeat for the Loyalists.
However the problem with supply is now understood, and elsewhere on the chemworld sufficient alternate stocks are sourced to attempt resupply.

So fall all those who defy the power of Chaos!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Good game - the Inquisition and Astarte forces looked pretty good for most of the game, but the arrival of the Chaos heavy hitters (Baalor and retinue) spelled the end for the valiant Angels of Thunder.

Overwatch proved stupidly effective this game with a couple of units and Torquemada himself laid low. The Angels of Thunder Terminator saves were also dire (losing three to lowly lasguns and a flamer!), but slightly made up for by having two scouts survive a direct hit from an orbital strike.

Next game, something eldritch stirs in the skein between worlds....
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Baalor watched the broken form of the loyalist captain topple from the well head and tumble to the ground far below. Across the field his forces were victorious as the Inquisition slunk away to the west.

The Chaos Lord Held the daemon weapon up and examined the rich Astarte blood hissing on its blade. This was not the first loyalist chapter he had destroyed and it would not be the last.

“Begin loading the promethium and the remaining garrison troops onto the ships. We will deliver them all into the conflagration that is consuming the system capitol” He turned his armoured form to his retinue.

"Their deaths along with the rest of our mortal forces, meaningless as they are, will turn the imperials face from our true mission here….”
