Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

Just a quick question to the community.

Personally I like the game, love the fluff and occasionally dabble in a bit of painting, but I know some people only paint and others only take an interest in the background (I have yet to find someone who only enjoys warhammer for its brilliant gameplay, I wonder why?).

Just to clarify this refers to which parts of warhammer you currently find enjoyable rather than how you started, although it would be interesting to see how peoples tastes have changed since they began.

Right now it has to be the painting aspect of the hobby, and getting the entire army to a place I'm happy with. I haven't gamed in a while because I've been having such a blast painting. I'm also finally getting on to the vehicles, which gives me an excuse to try some new techniques out.

Oh yeah. and Deathwatch. Can't wait to start those guys.

I'd say that I'm not, short of painting up an old 2nd edition army. I enjoy the fluff and seeing what people do - but the game, and the company have thus far completely lost me.

Love painting and modeling - it's the thing I get super excited for most of the time. I love the models and how beautiful some of the new stuff is (GW's resin is awful tho), and I like making peices to display. Kind of dissappointed I missed this year's Armies on Parade. It's so much bigger this year! I really want to know how well I would do against a larger crowd, and am sad that I seem to have missed the perfect opportunity. (I entered last year but there were only 3 people, so winning kind of did not count to me - no matter how much the guy that took 2nd bragged that he had won a Golden Demon [he left out that it was the kid category].)

Love the lore. My co-workers almost always regret asking me what the strange pictures on my cubical wall are - I can blather on for hours.

I actually like playing the game, even though it often frustrates me. But, there are factors that add into this: I'm an engineer (I love arguing), I play Eldar (insert 40k "easy mode" joke here), and I actively like research (the bulk of rules does not bother me). A lot of my super large winds in motivation come after playing a game.

I chose a mixture of the three, and I think you should add another option: I have a healthy gaming community with several friends to play with/against.

I went for other.
Basically at this point I'm too invested to give up.
I have thousands of pounds of models, dice, books, scenery, a games room etc.
I haven't played much 40k for the last 2 editions as I've really not enjoyed it much, unless there is a big change next edition I can see myself selling off most of my collection and concentrating on other games that I'm enjoying far more.

I like collecting, like playing, less so painting but its fun sometimes.
Coming up with different army builds or trying something whacky also still keeps my interest as do the multiple factions and army builds out there.

I've never played but I love the lore and the painting/modeling aspect. I think it makes it a very productive hobby and much more enjoyable to me than playing video games or something

I chose other.

I Do love playing
I do like modeling and I do like painting but none of that really keeps me in the game anymore.

What really keeps me in this hobby is the fact that I have invested so much time and money into my army that I can't see myself just giving up and throwing in the towel.

The game is fun when played against certain armies and friends, but in competitions (Where I like to play) my army is so unbalanced I am almost relegated from the start.

Painting and modeling is fun but GW keeps increasing prices to the point where its unfathomable for me to increase my army unless I am using 3rd party models or buying cheap on EBAY or here on Dakka.

So really its pure stubbornness teamed with my hope that the next edition will fix a lot of the underlying issues in this game.

For me it's my friends who also do the hobby. If I didn't ha e friends to share the experience with then it would be no fun at all.

It would have to be momentum from when I did love the game. Currently, I hate 7th edition's rules, I'm burned out on painting space marines, and the new books and such leave me cold.

The background, models, and friends really. I'm slowly building up another playable army to get back to 40k that isn't my Eldar.

Fluff, game rules. Of course I play the superior 2nd ed with some house rules so...

Who says you have to try to be satisfied with whatever crap GW puts out? They put out something you don't like, change it. Only really tough one is models if you aren't sculptor yourself.

I like the models and the retro-ness of older ones. It's sorta like that one dog that is so ugly it's somehow cute again.

For me, it's two things:

-The freedom to create. The options for conversions are seemingly endless, along with the ability to pretty much use whatever paint scheme you like, and even come up with your own chapter/warband/mob/splinter fleet. Few other games offer such range to create, if any. I don't know of any that exceed it, other than pen and paper RPGs.

-The fact that I live in a major city with a healthy population of gamers of all types [actually, most of them are easy to get along with, or at least tolerable].

There is nothing that keeps me in this hobby beyond 30 years of enjoyment. I saw my first 40k set at age 14, and still play the game at age 44.

I like to the background and I like to paint. I don't like playing against others though since they all have bad attitudes (at least all the ones I've played too or spoken too).

I like to model, converting sculpting casting etc.
I like to watch my own painted models on the battle field.
Painting is just a way to make the this possible.

The game isn't all that good but I like my models enough to compensate it.

A mix of three for me, but if I had to name a single one it is the vastness of 40K - there is always something to model/paint/invent/modify to keep me interested. And since I have the luxury of houseruling freedom (I don't have to play with strangers) I do enjoy this game deeply.

I like the background a lot but that isn't the thing that keeps me in the hobby right now. I could just as well play any of the RPG's if I just wanted the background.

Just the fluff, background and story. GW has otherwise totally lost me as a customer.

I still love this game and been playing for 14 years, because the community that I play with is fantastic. We have a very large group that plays and we love going from fluffy games to comp and everything in between. we travel to tournaments and hold monthly ones. Also this game is still very fun despite what GW does.

I swear a few locals only play and don't give a gak about fluff or looks.

I can't stand the current rules, but I keep abreast of new releases. Most releases in the past few years have been brilliant. I also still play BFG, Necromunda and similar 40k spinoffs and I enjoy both the fluff and the modeling aspects equally.
