I didn't know whether to post this in 40k background or here considering this question is a bit of both, so I figured I'd post it where I would get the best answers without spamming. If it gets moved, I won't be mad.

Now, I really don't know how to paint 1st company Silver skulls or veteran sergeants, considering their silver helm is literally the peak of their color scheme (picture below). I guess it would depend on just how much the Silver Skulls respect the Codex Astartes. Would they mind painting the helms of their veterans white? Or is their another way they could mark their veterans?

I can't seem to find anything on it with a quick google, and I don't know the correct answer, but here are a couple of suggestions to ponder:

It doesn't have to be a full-white helmet, a vertical stripe down the center might look better?
Some chapters (I believe the Blood Angels as an example?) invert the shoulderpads of veterans - i.e. black with a silver trim becomes silver with a black trim.
There might be a non-GW metallic white paint out there? Might clash less than matt white?

In heraldric terms silver and white were interchangeable.

Maybe just go for an even brighter and more polished silver for the helms of the veterans?

I'd go with one of Quanar's suggestions - inverted shoulder pads or metallic white for the helm. Probably the shoulders TBH.

The Marine pictured appears to be displaying his company colour in his squad markings.

Veterans might therefore display their status with a white squad marking on the right shoulder.

That's actually a great idea. I think I might end up doing the inverted shoulders.
