hey! never really been around this thread, but I figure why not show off the scenery I made! keep in mind this is the first time I've ever made scenery. but yeah, take a look if you want!



I also made a forest, but it's generic so no need to see it.

I like it. You should add some cotton and paint it to look like the engin is still on fire then you can use it as a fog/smoke cover in your games

I like it, simple but evocative, and you can use it for several time periods....

I personally agree that some ground cover is needed - for ground foam try a store that carries model trains - it's a bit cheaper that way, alternately mix water and white glue (50/50 or 66/33 more or less) and use it to fix basic dirt to the base, just something to make it look like nature.

You also want to figure out how long ago the crash happened, is it still smoldering? Or has it been there for years? For a recent crash, paint it up like it's new then dry brush silver to show where the paint has been ripped off by the impact, and use a sponge to stipple on some black smoke stains and char. If it's been there for years, stipple rust colours on, and dry brush streaks where water can flow down the sides.

Looks good! Nice focal point for a battle. Is the pilot alive in the wreckage? Does he carry some great secret? Is the plane loaded with a planet destroying virus? Maybe he's a chaos renegade who just escaped from the Dark Angels fortress and...ooops, got carried away. See how much a nice piece of scenery sparks a battle!
As above, you could add cotton smoke (I use steel wool sprayed black and then brushed with orange/red at base and grey higher up). Even a coating of gravel (find some in the rain gutters! and glue it on with pva) could fill that base up. Nice share! You're no longer a nooby!

so... sorry for the minor thread resurrection but I just wanted to show you the finished product, I know I said I would submit it a while ago but I got sick so this is the soonest time I could make it

Some comments which may be useful for your next project:

1) It doesn't look like a real crash. You've got a completely undamaged back half of the plane stuck in a solid wall of rock. A head-on crash like that would reduce the plane to a scattering of aluminum scraps and some scorch marks on the ground. The only way to get a relatively intact plane would be a skidding crash along flat ground, more of an off-airport landing than a crash. Same thing with the left wing, how did it get torn off completely but still manage to be perfectly intact, lying underneath a giant boulder? When constructing something like this you want to think about the narrative of how it happened. Don't just cut neatly along the joints, think about where the real damage would be. You'd have wing spars/cables/etc hanging off the left side, and a crumpled mess of the wing somewhere behind the rest of the wreck. The weapon pylons should have been torn off on impact. Etc.

2) The terrain doesn't look real. First of all, you never want to use unpainted rocks/dirt/etc in terrain. The scale looks obviously wrong, especially next to painted models. Second, like the wreckage, think about how the real scene should look. You're never going to have a nice neat pile of boulders sitting on top of flat ground. Rocks are embedded in the ground, dirt is an uneven surface piled up around them, etc. If it's a recent wreck there should be damage to the ground where the plane hit. If it's an older wreck there should be dirt filling in the gaps around it, so the wreckage is half buried in the ground.

3) Painting matters. Maybe you're going to get to this later, but always paint your terrain. Paint the wreck model, paint the rocks, paint everything. Nice terrain should require at least as much effort as painting your other models.
