Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

Three Daemon princes that were in need of a good paint/repaint.

I got through them all throughout the weekend (and touch ups on Monday), I tried a few new techniques with these models: the Khorne prince was just trying a bit of kitbashing/touching up with green stuff, the Night Lords prince was trying to produce a lightning effect (his shoulder pads are a bit rough but I quite like how his leg armour turned out) and the Slaanesh prince was trying out a transition effect on the sword (not sure how to feel about it).

As always, looking for advice on how to improve! Thanks.

very cool! I really like the idea of the khorne kitbash. Throwing that leftover bloodcrusher head in looks fantastic. The lightning conveys pretty well, although I'm sure you could have gone even further with it! If you're looking for feedback for improvement, then here's mine!

It looks like you're relying heavily on drybrushing for most of your surfaces, and as a result you're getting a sort of "dusty" look as the paint builds up into a rough surface. Consider using smaller amounts of paint when drybrushing, and even drybrushing in tiers for a smoother gradient. Eventually I'd recommend getting into techniques like wet blending and glazing for smoother areas and then leave the drybrushing for particularly roughly textured spots.

The other main issue I see is the mold lines. These are especially apparent on the slaanesh prince's arms and legs. Since you drubrushed these areas, you've inadvertently highlighted the mold lines, making them bright and very noticeable. It's very much worth the time to clean those lines off before you begin painting any mini as they can detract from even the best of paintjobs!

Lastly - there are a couple spots where you got outside the lines. The most apparent places are the night lord's eyes and the slaanesh prince's horns and sword eyes. This just takes practice, although getting a smaller paintbrush always helps!

Keep the pics coming! Looking forward to seeing your next model(s)!

I was a bit tentative about over doing the lightning since I had never done it before, I am certainly going to try it a bit more in the future.

I don't know why but I have really taken to dry brushing and I love the effect it can give to raised areas but I know what you mean by over using it, glazing is certainly a technique I have seen but never used, although I'll have to take a look at wet blending.

Unfortunetly he was in a lot worse state when I had started, not just mold lines but bumps from where it joined to the sprew were left. I tried to clean him up as best as I could but since he was already built there wasn't much I could do. :(
I'm certainly trying to clean up models as best as I can before I build them now but I must have built the Slaanesh prince in a rush (he's been sat unpainted for about a year now).

Lastly - there are a couple spots where you got outside the lines. The most apparent places are the night lord's eyes and the slaanesh prince's horns and sword eyes. This just takes practice, although getting a smaller paintbrush always helps!

Yeah, I was really dissappointed when I accidently painted outside the lines on the Night Lords prince since I was quite proud of the rest of him. The Slaanesh prince, I must admit, is more of my poor eye sight (minor colour blindness) and I didn't notice I went outside the lines until you just pointed it out now (red on brown isn't a great contrast for me).

Keep the pics coming! Looking forward to seeing your next model(s)!

Thanks! I'm hoping, with some help from people like you, I can get a lot better with my painting.
