I've just picked up my Trio of the Primarch, and while I and many others love the new Cypher sculpt, Guiliman doesn't quite hit the mark for me (really should have been called Trio of Cypher and some other, less amazing heroes). I think there are some lovely aspects of the model, like the sword (ok, I just want an excuse to try painting a flaming object), and the fact that he's essentially in double-size MkVIII armour. So, I'm going to see what I can do to make the new Robute more to my tastes.

What do I want to change?

The halo
It's been bugging me for a while that all the photos I've seen show the points of the halo drooping towards Guiliman's head, and I was hoping it was just a problem with perspective. Imagine my disappointment on cracking open the box to find that it's not perspective, they really are all bent inwards. I haven't a clue why, but I think I'm going to scrap the halo completely, and I'll think about adding something in its place if the final composition seems off.

The Foot-Braziers
I flat out don't like these, and the first thing I did with the early pictures was photoshop off the Braziers. Guesss what - I liked the result.

The Head
It's barely bigger than a standard bare Marine head, so while it's probably appropriate scale for a 54mm human, we should be operating in 54mm Heroic scale, meaning bigger heads and hands than actually realistic. Contemptor dreadnoughts seem to have heads at an appropriate scale, so I might pick up the Contemptor cyclone missle launcher (unless anyone has a spare Contemptor head they'd be happy to part with). Failing that, I'll improvise.

The filigree
In some places it's quite tasteful and Imperial, but in others (especially the thigh plates), it just looks like someone up-sized a Raptor. Not sure I'll be able to do much about that, but anywhere it's just filling space, I intend to remove it and straighten-up the edges in proper Imperial style.

The pose.
Some might argue that this is the most egregious error with the model, while others might call it the straw that broke the camel's back. Either way, it's got to go. The "complimentary" artwork included in the box has Guiliman striding purposefully forward with a mildly menacing/focused expression. He's still a little hunched over, but if I straighten him up, sculpt in some abs to turn the chest-plate in to a proper Greek/Roman-style muscled cuirass, I think he'll look a bit more reasonable.

I'd also like to use the model as 30k Guiliman too, so I might add in some more Roman design aspects like the strip-leather tabbard, but we'll see.

Thoughts, comments? Pictures to follow as soon as I have something to show!

I'd echo the comments on the halo and the braziers, leaving them off is what i plan to do when I (eventually) get mine.

I was thinking of filing off all of the extra jazz on his armour and smoothing it out (there's a great photoshop of it on a thread here somewhere). There's also a pic of someone who's photoshopped him to look like the Emperor.

Make sure you post pics!

EDIT: Found them.

Holy gak. That fixes all the issues I had with the model, except for the sword.

If I wasn't convinced before, that photoshop would definitely cement the no-filigree look. It's darn fiddly though!

Not sure how much work I'll be able to do on the abs, as I hadn't realised how twisted they were in that pose. Oh well...

Sounds like a great plan!

The filigree itself isn't bad, it's just that it's so at odds with the rest of the Imperial aesthetic. It's downright Tzeentchian. Roboute Tzaaniman I call him.

I must say he does look good as the Emperor though...

Good lord that amount of ornamentation!

I had no idea.

I know it's a bit anathema but none of the Primarch figures have appealed to me. They just haven't :( None of them really resemble what I'd consider a Primarch.

I definitely prefer Guilliman's helmet head vs the face. The face just isn't... I dunno. sigh. Just doesn't work for me.

Anyway, good luck in your endeavour!! that's going to be a lot of work

That Emperor photoshop is rather awesome!

Don't I just know it. I've spent the evening removing excess ornamentation, and it's in places you wouldn't believe - the oddest so far have been on the backpack vents, and the elbow plates! Still, the model's looking a lot cleaner now, so I'll work on the pose tomorrow.

Just my two cents, the face looks more like a tavern barlady.

Ok, first step in fixing the pose is to separate the feet from the legs. Fortunately there's a nice recessed area on both sides of the left ankle which makes it a little easier to do it without losing detail (less so on the right though, where it's only on one side). After i get the right foot off, I'll look at whether i need to take either let of before the knee too.

Curious to see how it ends up. I dislike the model so much I'll be shocked if someone can "save" it to a good looking end result.
