I was planing on painting some Imperial fist in WH40K and was wonder if anyone had some advice on what paint I should use. I know Averland Sunset is the citadel paint GW recommends but I was hoping Valaho would possibly have something close. If any one has any ideas that would be great.

"Valaho" has a few equivalent colors in their ranges. Two of them are Model Color Gold brown and Game Color Heavy gold brown. I believe
heavy colors from Game color use the same formula as Model color but don't quote me on that.

I have VMC gold brown and it's a nice color. It covers and flows well. I'm not 100% sure if it's the exact match because I don't have averland sunset.
Hope it helps.

A lot depends on what tone of yellow you are looking for. Do you like a bright sun yellow or more of a golden yellow? The attached pic is of a knight I am working on. I used Createx Golden Yellow on a white base. One caveat is Createx works best thru an airbrush.

Your base coat makes a difference too. White will make the yellow pop more, black will give the yellow a greenish tint. The knight was done with a white base and brown for pre-shading.

Just my .02 worth. Have fun with it, I am finding yellow to be awesome to work with.

This model was done mostly in Vajello Gold Brown. It's a touch orange, but part of that is from the Sepia ink wash.

Thanks a bunch guys glad to have some colors to pick from other then just averland sunset. Also would not have thought the base coat mattered so I will be that in mind.

Personally I really like Averland Sunset. Highlight with Ushabti Bone and it looks ace. Here's a group my brother painted up recently.

I painted this Mega Boss trying to get a rich and bright yellow. Used Vallejo White Primer, GW Averland Sunset, GW Cassandra Yellow (Shade), GW Yriel Yellow, then dry brushed GW Dorn Yellow. When I am feeling steady I will go back with GW white scar for extreme highlights.

An Airbrush definitely makes it easier. Yellow is no picnic.

I used Vallejo colors, I want to say Flat Yellow was my top color. The best trick I've found for painting yellow... on a red primed model, I build up my yellows and highlight areas to my liking. Then GLOSS GLOSS GLOSS the heck out of them. Now do all my washes, mostly red, with brown/black washes in the deepest crevasses and under areas - this [the glossing] is so as not to disturb my painfully created nice Yellow with the washes. Then I Matte coat it and do the weathering. Yellow weathers up nicely with a brown/purple/metallic mix and an easy sponge method.

If you're going for a more traditional paint scheme:
Averland Sunset base, Reikland Fleshshade or Agrax Earthshade wash (Thin it down with some medium, otherwise it's very heavy), Yriel Yellow layer, Flash Gitz yellow layer, Pallid Wych Flesh edge highlight.

Or you can base coat them in Screaming Skull, pre-shade with Agrax Earthshade (Recess shade, don't mop it over the whole model), wash over the whole thing with Cassandora Yellow to give it the colour, Pallid Wych Flesh remains a favourite of mine for edge highlighting.

3000pts Blood Angels (4th Company) - 2000pts Skitarii (Voss Prime) - 2500pts Imperial Knights (Unnamed House) - 1000pts Imperial Guard (Household Retainers)

2000pts Free Peoples (Edlynd Fusiliers) - 2000pts Kharadron Overlords (Barak Zilfin) - 500pts Ironweld Arsenal (Edlynd Ironwork Federation) - 1000pts Duardin (Grongrok Powderheads)

Wargaming's no fun when you have a plan!
