Hey guys, long time lurker - looking for advice on color scheme for a Knights of the Raven chapter (Raven guard successor chapter) before finishing up markings on my first sergeant. There is very little information on these guys beyond a generic paint scheme, so I have no idea what they'd do for rank indications. Was originally going to do the inverse of the Raven guard - as in: Blank helm for sergeant., black arms for vets, and both for vet sergeant... but then wasn't sure what to do for captain.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Could always go with the codex markings, but didn't think that'd fit well with Raven guard fluff.

Also, of course - C&C is very much appreciated for painting thus far - I'm a noob, so be gentle. Since Knights of the Raven are just straight silver and black colors, I wanted to add color through heat affected areas on the pack & weapon in the style that titanium 'blues'.

You could do one of the lower calf leg sections black with a number to denote which company he leads (Is it company????? It has been a long time!)

Failing that, I was thinking maybe changing the colour of the aquila to denote his rank as captain

Looks like they use red as a squad determination marker. So maybe an incorporation of red would work.

Perhaps a black and red crest on the helm. Akin to the new scheme in the new primaris lt.

There is a lot of silver. I would get some black and white in there as a nod to there "parent" chapter

I would go with that idea of Black helmet for a Sgt. black arms for vets, and both black for sgt vet.

then for the capt. add some red either helmet, or aquila, or both.

Yeah, I'll second the silver mention. Some color to break it up just a touch will really make the metallicsa pop.
Maybe trim in black? Around shoulder pads, elbows and Aquila. Then you could swap the black out for red to denote Sarge, Cap etc.

Forgot to mention how much I like what you have already done. Fantastic work, the heat staining on the vents is particularly striking!

Thanks for the feedback

Decided to stick with the "black head / back arms" approach, but going to have sergeants be a black stripe instead of full black helm for now, so a full black helm can serve as a higher rank option. Also inverted the loincloth colors while putting chapter symbols on... I'm like the lean towards more black accents to contrast all the silver... the white was kind of lost in all the shiny.

Would like to add some actual color next to designate the squad number & company, but that's it - the only other colors I'm intending to incorporate through the head coloration stuff to try to stay true to the chapter colors).

That said, would love some guidance on what the heck is the deal with Raven Guard markings in this respect. Some fluff says shoulder edge = unit type, while others say its the company color... is this just an inconsistency between editions - if so - which is the more accepted approach? If unit type is the appropriate color driver (red yellow green), is there a 'command' color?

Sorry for all the questions - just want to get a clear plan laid out before working the other 60 units on my shelf

Figured out the Raven Guard shoulder trim = company color thing, finished a second sergeant, and started my rhino gunner! Just need to put squad numbers over the tactical markings...
...and also repainted first guy's power weapon for the who-knows-how-many-ith time. Struggling to figure out a look that I like / doesn't look like crap.
