Hi I hope someone can help me with this problem. After finding some of my warriors of minas tirith had developed a fuzzy/grainy undercoat. I tried to fix them by using dettol. After that failed, I decided to learn my mistakes and started using my undercoat spray better. Then recently iI decided to finally paint my isengard troll and discovered that my previous undercoat had also got some fuzzy/grainy undercoat. Now I don't want to have to replace this model so I went and looked online and tried oven cleaner, but that has not had an effect. I also tried some nail polish remover but that also didn't work. So I am hoping someone can help me find a solution to this problem. I am based in the uk.

Not that it will help you now, but in my experience with fuzz, getting them into the paint stripper before the primer fully cures helps a lot in getting it off. I used simple green. For the batch I let sit for a while before cleaning, I had to scrub them forever to get something passible. Still not perfect, but good for tabletop work. The ones I started soaking right away cleaned up good.

Hopefully someone can get you the miracle answer, and not just bad news. Welcome to Dakka by the way.

Yeah on one of the minas tirith warriors it looked like the spray had made the plastic fuzzy itself. i tried to file it and ran the risk of losing detail.

Here are some pictures of the isengard troll, could i paint over it and the paint would cover it?

Simple green or dettol. Soak it in them. use a toothbrush to scrub off. You cannot paint over it. I just had this issue, its still fuzzy.

WHen you prime, spray closer like 6-8", the primer may be drying in the air before it hits the model. This was my issues, especially with Army Painter Primers.

No, the paint will not cover it. Your best bet is Super Clean or Purple Power. They are automotive degreasers available in most auto stores. Soak them overnight, scrub, repeat as necessary. Be sure to wear rubber gloves as it will suck all the grease out of your fingers too.

Dettol works fine, but you need to give it time, and possibly more than one treatment in different batches. I have a 'junk dettol' jar that everything goes in first for 24 hrs, which sloughs off the gummy stuff, give it a quick *wipe* with kitchen towel and dump it in the 'clean dettol' jar for 24-48rs and then go at it with the toothbrush - it saves time handling chemicals and I have gotten pristine looking plastic out of it more than once.

Also, don't forget to soak them in water for half an hour or so when you're done to loose the residual dettol (and another quick brush won't hurt - when they stop making dettol foam they're ready) as it will ruin any basecoat.

Some people find the idea that other people can be happy offensive, and will prefer causing harm to self improvement.

Update, I have put some of the minas tirith warriors in the dettol for over 48hr and some of the fuzzy has come of what would be a good way of removing paint in hard to reach places where my brush can't get enough area on?

Another update a lot of the primer has come on the troll but the sword seems to be permanently fuzzy so plan b will be to just buy another troll and use the sword in that set for this one and make the other on a mordor troll.

Email GW, it's a paint issue. I sent them the pictures of mine and they sent me a free set, and a free new paint, so long as you have the batch number for the old one.

Where would I find the batch number. I got the troll and the minas tirith men from an independent stockist.

Hard to reach try a toothbrush. Also try a high grit sand paper. Like 1000.

Dettol has worked fine for me stripping paint off everything. I'm going to try IPA (isopropyl alchohol?) as I can't stand the smell of Dettol.
Be careful with nail polish remover with acetone in it, as it can melt the fine detail on some miniatures, much like if you got plastic cement on it.

I've found trying to pull the "skin" off of miniatures after a Dettol works best before scrubbing them, as it can pull off the bits in the crevices too.
Use a wooden toothpick for hard to reach areas to get it out. Anything else, like a craft knife or a metal toothpick can damage the miniatures.

I use plastikote black primer, which works fine, but before spraying I give it a good shake, but I also put the can in warm water for 5-10 minutes.

I had the same problem with the undercoat, today.
Do you know why this thing happens? I want to avoid it next time i'll spray the undercoat

Thank you

Generally it happens for one of two reasons:
1. The primer you have is crap and you shouldn't be using it.

2. and much more commonly, is you are spraying from too far away and the paint dries in the air before it hits the model.

Thank you.
I have just remove the grainy coat using Ethyl alchool 90% (the one used for house cleaning) it works great and doesn't damage the models.

I'll post pics if you want
