Does anyone know why they loaded sideways?

These look pretty neat, no idea why they are sideways but I'm digging that twin sword guy.

I'm not sure if its the pic quality or painting but the bases look kinda flat. For my tyranids I usually do a a lightly sanded base then hit it with a hot glue gun. Once its purpled up it looks really tyranid-y even without extra bits.
