Finally finished my first few Skitarii, and I’m pretty pleased with the first attempt. A couple of messy spots, and a couple techniques that I tried that didn’t end up looking good (I don’t like the way the gun and backpack coils turned out). Any comments on improvements to try for my next guys are appreciated!

A solid start! Maybe a wash over the backpack/gun highlights to blend it in a bit? Other than that just keep painting!

Would a wash mute the colors? I tried to dry brush progressive layers or dark red, light red, orange, and white to get a glow effect. It kinda looked okay until the white. I’m probably dry brushing wrong but the white seemed to cover too much and got a kind of tacky/scrubby look. Not a smooth covering of just the raised bits like I thought I would get.

Welcome to the hobby! Off to a fine start. A wash in a suitable color won't mute the color, just knock the contrast down a bit and smooth the stark color transitions.

The metallics are well done. Dark but easily identifiable.
The red area on the gun suggests you might want to thin your paints and do multiple coats. Most GW paints thin with a little water, I typically use Vallejo airbrush thinner for this purpose.
But good job!

Yea I didn’t thin the paint on the coils since I was dry brushing. I thought it wouldn’t make much difference if it was thinned. But will absolutely try that for my next few. I’ve got plenty of little cyborgs to trial and error on.

Well done, for your first set of painted minis, solid job. Thoughts on how you are going to base them? Red Martian bases perhaps?

Definitely going for a Martian red; I think the brighter base will set off the pretty dark scheme I have. I’m digging through my garage for some industrial looking bits I could use for piping, barbed wire, valves, ect. Or I might just keep it simple and throw some Ironearth down and paint it red and rusty.
