I wasnt sure if this was the best sub forum for this topic but basically ive got my old Empire army that's been sitting on my display shelf for several years now and with the recent release of Cities of Sigmar it looks like I would be able to use most of it if i went through the process of rebasing it all. ive struggled with deciding whether i should or not, right now its a really nice and complete time capsule display army of OOP figures but on the other hand i wish i could play them. Does anyone who has gone through a similar project have any tips for the best way to go about rebasing?

Is empire even usable in AOS? Like, as a non AOS player I'm curious. I thought they got replaced by Stormcast.

They are, they were combined with all the "old world" models into the recently released Cities of Sigmar battletome. basically everything but the cannon and knights are still valid. the war altar i would use as a celestial hurricanum.

Yeah, I've got a bunch of WFB armies including Empire.
I just left them as is. Casually they're fine for AOS on square bases.
There's talk of "going back to the Old World" soonish so I'll wait to see how that system pans out before I rebase.
I'm predicting something like the lotr movement trays.

GW has said they are making "Old World" fantasy again and hinted it with a picture of a square base. However they were also very clear that its a project at least around 3 years off. Furthermore if they do go back to square bases for rank and file style battles you can simply put round base models onto a movement tray to get the same effect (since most of the time anything that isn't a monster or hero is likely going to be in a unit and thus on a movement tray anyway).

The real issues would be freestanding models (as noted just now) and also if the square bases for equivalent models become smaller than the round bases that they move onto for AoS.

It's really a hard call. AoS and converting to rounds lets you play right now and for 3, maybe 4 years time. However AoS Cities of Sigmar might get brand new models for the Empire that could have a very different design approach.

Meanwhile staying on the old bases basically leaves you to friendlies and likely waiting for years to use those models again.

Right now I'd be tempted to say keep your models as they are and start a new AoS army to tide you over. Or play one of the other rank and file games like Kings of War or 9th Age - that is if they are supported locally of course.
That way your army remains as it is and you get to sink your teeth into an "AoS" army to keep you into the game. Heck you might even start a fresh human force for Cities since the humans in Cities are designed to work with the aelves and dwarves within the faction as well. So having new models with a new painting style would work - plus any new release that come out.

I agree with Alex. I strongly suspect a rank and file movement tray system a la LOTR. It just makes the most sense.

Just start a kings of war group( i am assuming you have friends that still have their WHFB armies). it is what WHFBs should have become. kings of war rules lets you use models from any game company other than mantic so no need to make all that effort to re-base everything for AOS.

Agreed with the above, don’t do it.
1) they are quite well painted, redoing bases will mess that up and everyone will require retouching. If they weren’t well done, then I would consider it.
2) it’s probably easier to sell them then buy new and painted them on round bases. The old range are made to rank up.
3) the possibility of the old world coming back ala 30k.

I'd keep them as-is.

You can play casual AoS with square bases anyway - and it's not like they'll be a competitive army if you rebase them.

They're usable with 9th Age, KoW and whatever GW comes out with for square bases in the future.

They're already on the correct bases for using them in Mordheim.

I also wouldn't rebase them. People that would have a problem with using them for AoS are probably not worth playing with.

Thouse players are just sticking to the rules and the rules say use round bases. It is not mandatory now, but it wont take too many years before it will be.
That is why i suggested adapters. They snap on and with them your force can do both AoS and "old world" whenever that is released.
