Hello,

So I haven't painted Warhammer since the 90s. I did however do some historical painting in my late 20s.

During lockdown I watched some videos and got some heavy nostalgia so here I am. Certainly a lot has changed since 2nd edition for sure. Those plastics were a step down from the multi part rogue trader ones I had. 10 quid for 30 irr.

Anyway, not quite sure where this is headed but really enjoying the painting right now. Experimenting with air brushes and oil washes.

I like the dusty and sun-bleached look buuut....drill those gun barrels!!! Or alternatively paint a black dot on them.

Hadn't even thought of the gun barrels. Not sure people did it back in my day. Need to invest in a drill.

With historic stuff I was doing traditional base, wash highlight - see below.

With these though I did skin with mostly airbrush and virtually no highlights anywhere else. Rather I just did rough basecoat - quite light - then wash with ak streaking grime. Cleaned with sprits then added dust and rust with mig migments. Final step was just a bit of dark outlining and shadows with black ink.

Conclusion: those fancy modern acrylic washes are overrated.

Hi, pretty happy with these though didn't enjoy the death skull so much. Blood axes and Goffs seem to work best for me.

Exelent work once again.
Love the washed out authentic style (if that make sense).

You should do a full diorama to display them

Actually the skin tones are all a bit different as I was experimenting but process the same.

Air brush Waagh flesh
Airbrush straken green
Airbrush either ogryn camo or ubshanti bone
Airbrush cadian flesh small patches for interest
Wash athinuan cami shade for some
Some brush highlighting on face features
Streaking grime on some. This step I've decided to leave out.

What I've learned from this is ork skin is less about highlighting and more about blending different tones. Airbrush so quick and easy for this. Actually, there is no highflying on anything but the skin and then only airbrush with a tiny bit of brush work. It all basically washes and weathering over base coats. I used inks on most of the shoulder pads over the natural highlighting that occurred from the airbrush stage. This I a very quick and easy method as inks are so fast to apply.

Base black with airbrush, strong zenethol highlight with white via airbrush, inks, wash with oil or enAmel, weathering

Sounds like a lot of stages but they are quick and don't require much skill or prececision which suites me well.

And some boyz!!

Think Im now happy with skin formulas. Sticking to 2 for variety, a single tone of skin would be quite odd really when you think about it.
