Hi my lovely wife got me this cool painting box for Xmas which is am soon to transfer all my paints and brushes and current project to. As you can see it comes with 10 holders for minis that you can stick them to for painting but what would you use to stick the minis base to the holder? I have tried blue tack in the past for sticking minis to an old spray can top but eventually they fall off.

Any better suggestions?

Sorry in advance for the wonky apple uploads

Trick about using blu/gren tack is to use alot of it, and it has to be a fresh lump for maximum sticky effect.

Other then that, thick doublesided tape or woodglue.

I use a mix of blue and white tack on my wine corks

I only use white tack, though i have used sand and wood glue to make a rough surface on my various wooden holding pieces for the tack to grip to. This works from small right up to the largest minis.

What’s the different between white and blue tack I just thought it was that white tack doesn’t leave marks on your wall

The really old blue used to leave a grease mark on painted surfaces, not sure what the difference is now but im certain its just colour preference

Yea, it was originaly white in the start, but kids mistake it for chewing gum so different colours was added.
Apparently they now comes in many different colours, but they are all made basicly the same.

Only recently have I purchased a painting holder, and it came with its own putty. Previously I used caps from medicine bottles and used tape or white glue. White glue usually worked slightly better, but tape was quicker and more convienent. If you magnetize your figures' bases you could put a metal plate or another magnet on the paint stick. Other people (seen on the web) pin figures to bases, and stick the pin in a cork for painting, then once figure and base have been painted, glue figure to base with pin.

I've never had an issue with blu tak. Now I use the gee dubs paint handle, but I usually base models after I paint them, so I pin them to a base and use a tiny dab of superglue on one foot, so that they are easy to pry off with a scalpel when they're ready to be based, and have a handy pin already in place.

So you could drill a small pin hole in the holder, then do something similar, into the holder itself.

Magnets. All my models are magnetised for transport so I glue the magnets in the base before spraying. My holders used to have steel paper stuck on the top and they worked great.

Ultimately I moved to the GW handle however. I still magnetise, but the handles are just better to use.

Yea, but they dont work good on bases that are not round and flat edged.

GW ones work better on bases with a bevelled edge than straight vertical one.

I've got a bunch of models on non-bevelled bases and they pop out of the GW one due to the tension on the springs that hold the base in place.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

not the result i had, but could be that i got a bad product(aka weak spring), the springs as you say are the weakpoint of the product.

I don't use paint holders, but I do use medical gloves when painting.

For the most part, I only ever grip the base. When I do need to touch the model, nothing bad happens.

From time to time, I do pin models and put them pins in corks. Mostly when I want to do the head separately from the body.

Fresh blue tack is holding them on better than expected. I wonder if it sticks to wood better than plastic

Depends on the surface.
If the wood has a scruffy surface then yes it will grab on better then slick plastic.

Poster putty works best when warmed and recently stretched. Work it with your hands and stretch it a bunch like taffy and it should improve its adhesion

Pin your model and attach a piece of wine cork to those stands to stick it into. It’s also great this way because you can paint the model and base separately and then pin the model to the base which I like to do

How do i pin a model?

Get a paperclip, get a pin vice/hand drill, find a drill bit that matches the width of the paperclip, snipp of a suitable piece of the paperclip using steel cutters(your basic hosehold plyer usualy allso has a sidecutter)(never ever use plastic sidecutter to cut steel, they get damaged), drill a hole into the model/part(dont drill too deep), add a dab of superglue in the hole, push the rod in and let it cure. Should the model loosen up, just pull the rod out and drop in a new dab of superglue.

Alternatly you can use the whole paperclip if you dont want to snipp of small parts.
