Post Malone bought Magic: The Gathering's 'One Ring' card valued as high as $2 million
https://www.npr.org/2023/08/03/1191841285/post-malone-bought-magic-gathering-mtg-one-ring-card-million
Last year, American rapper and singer Post Malone dropped $800,000 on a rare Black Lotus card signed by the artist who drew it, making it the most expensive Magic: The Gathering card purchase ever — until now. He may have paid as much as $2 million for The One Ring, a one-of-a-kind card released in June.

Good on the guy who drew the one ring. Congratz on being a millionaire. Go retire buddy. Live your best life.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

Ehhh, apparently there has been wonky business behind that, the Magic community is (as usual) up in flames over things. I did not follow the issue too closely because bleh, marketing stunts, but there might have been some shenanigans in assigning the serialized ring to a country where that whole thing does not constitute an illegal lottery (which would of course be wise) and store owners might have been fishing for it somehow?

It's been low-key known for a long time that you can, with stupid amounts of research or something (I'm not clear on how it works), track card rarities by production numbers. I.E. there is a method resellers use, and have used for some time, that allows them to guess what packs are likely to have very valuable cards and where you happen to buy the boxes matters for exploiting it.
Certain regions/countries make it easier to do than others.

Prolly more safe too, as MTG higer ups has taken choises over the past year that will de-value older paper cards.

I'm not one to tell someone what to do with their money, but damn you could do a lot of good with that rather than buying a piece of cardboard with a bad piece of art on it.

Some more for NPR
There's money in Magic: The booming business of rare game cards
https://www.npr.org/2023/08/08/1192404827/mitg-pokemon-game-card-collecting
Post Malone is known for smashing music-streaming records, but the pop star is also raising the bar in a more niche arena.
The musician, a super fan of the fantasy tabletop card game Magic: The Gathering, just bought a one-of-a-kind card from the game in a record sale, helping boost a growing trend that's made game cards almost as popular as sports cards.
Another fan who pulled the newly released Magic card, depicting the golden ring from the Lord of the Rings trilogy, sold it to Post Malone for a reported $2 million. It's the first time the price of a playing card from Magic — which hasn't previously seen the same kind of mainstream success as other trading card games like Pokémon — crossed the seven-figure mark.
"It's kind of like the first time a baseball card ever sold for a million dollars," said Ken Goldin, a longtime sports memorabilia collector and owner of Goldin Auctions. "To all of the tens of millions of collectors in the world who collect Magic: The Gathering, it basically has solidified their collection and says 'Hey, this is serious business.' "
Look where Baseball cards are at right now friend.

God I wish this whole thing would die and MTG could be a game, not some kind of idiot cryptobro "investment" scheme.

It is and can be. My son and I play primarily with dollar store packs (15 cards for $1.50) and bolster that with the occasional single colour boosters or precons.
Just because a fool is easy to part with his money, doesn’t mean it can’t still be a game.
If one isn’t chasing the meta, it’s actually a fun game you play anywhere and for cheap.
Do we have champion decks that can win tournaments? No.
But we don’t really need those to play or have a good time.
One can indeed refuse to feed the machine and just play the game for fun.

Competitive play is what I enjoyed about MTG. And if you're not playing competitively why buy anything at all? Just proxy whatever you need.

Aslong as Vintage and Modern exists, the game will always be an investment rather then a game.

If we’re not playing competitively, nor are we heavily into MtG, how are we supposed to know what to proxy?
And paying a few bucks to make a couple decent decks is easier than chasing the meta.
Your statement doesn’t compute for a couple of super casuals like us. It’s much easier to just buy a few cards and packs instead of trying to figure out and research what we need, print or draw proxies and then play.
Why buy anything at all? Because when I’m in the dollar store, I can pick up 30 cards for $3 and do zero research and need zero proxies.
Just because I choose to do it inexpensively, doesn’t mean I care to sink time and energy into it instead.

A competitive player will never understand the consepts around non-competitive play and the enjoyment that they bring.
paper magic should learn from Arena: Artisan decks(common and uncommon cards only) are the moust fun way to play.
