Over the last few months, we've been teasing about a wargame for the Cohors Cthulhu universe. Whilst the Cohors Cthulhu RPG Kickstarter https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/modiphius/cohors-cthulhu-tabletop-roleplaying-game/ is coming to its final days, we've announced more details below for the miniatures game. The RPG Kickstarter does include a whole load of physical and STL miniatures of heroes from across the Roman Empire as well as a set of more heroic-style Legonaries.

The ruleset is based on the CLASH of Spears miniatures game by Alvaro and Francisco Erize and is a collaboration with Modiphius co-founder Chris Birch (that's me!). I approached the brothers to utilise the CLASH of Spears mechanics to create a solo and coop adventure wargame set in the Roman empire but where the legionaries and tribes must contend with cosmic forces, eldritch horrors, and former allies twisted to serve the outer gods.

This is a completely new core rule book. The CLASH of Spears rules have been stripped back to the bare essentials and meshed with an innovative new AI and narrative engine to power your stories on the battlefield. Designed for solo and coop play, the rules have been written to get you playing from the moment you open the book (there's a series of tutorial missions to introduce the rules step by step). Players will create their heroes and see them evolve as they follow a planned storyline and procedural campaign led by player choices unfolding as they play.

Starting with a lone soldier fleeing a terrifying ambush, you will lead a growing force of Roman legionaries, Tribal warriors and heroes from across the empire in a series of hidden wars against the armies of the scheming evil Outer gods. They have influenced and corrupted Germanic tribes, ancient Atlanteans and foul cults to fight against you and summon terrifying mythos creatures to fight by their side.

The game represents the skirmishes and battles the Roman Empire initially fought in the Germania region but will later expand to other regions and forces. The launch release will include 28mm scale high-quality resin miniatures (the same as our Elder Scrolls and Fallout range) and STL files with print-on-demand options compatible with other well-known historical ranges. The miniatures will cover heroes from across the Empire, The Cult of Mormo, the cosmic horrors they have summoned, and the powerful Herjan’s Horde. Popular mythos races like the Deep Ones, and MiGo will feature alongside giant creatures such as the Sheehad.

The capricious Elder gods sometimes intervene in your battles, represented by the familiar pantheon of gods. Maeren, an ancient descendant of a powerful galaxy-spanning race, the Hyperboreans, seeks to shore up the Roman empire and may bestow heroes with powerful magic like artefacts or provide help when it’s most needed, Atlantean survivors with powerful technologies that may help you hunt the enemies of their people. Still, the might of the Roman Legions and the bravery of the tribes and civilisations on the edges of the empire may be all that stands between this world and its destruction.

We've so far made three sets of minis in the same resin that we produce the Fallout Wasteland Warfare and Elder Scrolls Call to Arms mins in - this is two sets of heroes and a set of heroic legionaries in action.

There are also a number of heroes available as STL files only initially (next year, we will make them available as physical sets or 3D print on demand) along with all the creatures that will be part of the wargame launch.

I love the concept of the RPG, but have a hard time getting anyone to play them with me.

Now a wargame set in that same environment? That's an easy sell. Absolutely looking forward to hearing more about this.

So much so I may even have to sign up for this.

Poorly lit photos of my ever- growing collection of completely unrelated models!

This is a really cool concept. I would like in on this when it comes out.

Roman Legion vs Deep Ones, YES PLEASE!!!!

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

We've had a huge success with the Captain's Log solo RPG book for Star Trek so we're exploring a similar idea for Cohors later on. In the meantime the Adventure Wargame for Cohors Cthulhu is more in the line of 'lite-rpg' wargame experience - whether you want one or more heroes and a few scrappy soldiers, or several big units led by those heroes. I've even tested it with something like over 100 figures and it scales nicely .

This looks excellent. I'm trying to get a sense of scale and proportions: What size base are the minis in the pictures you posted mounted on?

@Chris - Would the monster stats/rules be simple enough to change into more common fantasy ones if someone is not a fan of Ctulhu?
Also an offtopic question - will there be an updated (with all errors etc. corrected) print for Five Parsecs from Home?

They're 30mm bases, 28mm scale minis (the proportion on these renders might not be exact, but those are what the final numbers will be).

Hi there yes pretty much you could use a pile of fantasy minis you have - eg Servitors could be zombies, Overlords could be chaos warriors, Priests could be necromancers or evil wizards and so on. The character creation will let you create pretty standard fantasy heroes too. There's a fair of Roman Era 'theme' in the campaign but I think if you want a purely fantasy game it's not going to be hard

Re Five Parsecs - We're starting a process to collect errata so in time yes

Dang. Shame they are so small, but you may be trying to target the historical market.

I can probably use ASOIAF Lannister Gold Cloaks for Roman-ish miniatures closer to my preferred scale.

Looks like a fun project.

Yeah we want to be compatible with the popular historical ranges - though they'll match the taller of the 28mm ranges as opposed to the smaller ones. Those Romans can get a little short at times though ;-)

Saying that if you 3d print you can scale them up a little without too much problem or use your own minis with our rules of course

Today's the last day on the Kickstarter if you want to get in early with the three resin miniatures sets, over 20 STLs and the PDFs or print books.
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/modiphius/cohors-cthulhu-tabletop-roleplaying-game/

We'll be inviting people to join the Beta test for the Adventure Wargame in the next few weeks - you'll be able to use any minis you have for testing - whether you have some Roman soldiers or not, you can use a bunch of fantasy heroes, zombies, orcs, evil wizards, a few larger creatures like Trolls or Ogres as the bigger enemies.

You can now download the free Cohors Cthulhu Tactics Prologue PDF to try out the game.

This is just an intro to the basic system and shows you how to play over three scenarios, and you only need a handful of minis.

We just finished an epic shoot at Sarissa Precision in Nottingham using their studio and some special scenics they've created for us. In the Prologue, you'll follow Centurion Marius and the survivors of an ambush as they try to survive a night alone in the forest against the forces of the Cthulhu mythos! The full game will let you scale up from skirmish-size games to multiple units, and it comes complete with character creation, a procedural campaign, and much more.

We'll be showing off more of the minis in a stream soon.
