I've been fascinated for years by the weird alien fauna in the Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader rulebook. I decided to build and paint various miniatures so I could represent these creatures on the tabletop.

First, I gathered together my minis from various sources.

I washed the resin miniatures in dish soap solution to remove any mold-release agents.

Grox

Here's an illustration of a grox from Rogue Trader:

I decided to make three groxes (groxen?). One is a "Grok" from Krakon Games, the most accurate to the original illustration.

Another is the "Bullock," also from Krakon Games:

Finally, I converted an old plastic "Cold One" from Citadel Miniatures, adding four horns and filling some gaps:

Cthellean Cudbear

Here's the original illustration:

For this creature, I opted to use a "Xenoursid Predator" from Knightmare Games, a huge, heavy chunk of solid metal! This came with a slottatab, but was far too large for a 25mm slottabase. I needed to carve a slot into a larger base to accommodate this beast. I used my Dremel tool for the job.

Razorwings

Here's the original illustration:

I used "Razorwings" from Citadel's Dark Eldar range. These were bought second hand, so they were already glued onto their flying stands and bases. I would need to wrap painter's tape around the transparent plastic parts before painting.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Ptera-squirrels

The original illustration:

I used "Dire Squirrels" from Krakon Games for these.

After assembling them, I noticed that they all had holes through their wing membranes here and there. The wings had been sculpted a little too thin, I guess, and didn't cast correctly.

I had to do quite a lot of greenstuff sculpting to get them looking healthy again.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Swarms

These weren't illustrated in the Rogue Trader book.

I used "Eyestinger Swarms" from Games Workshop's Kill Team Rogue Trader boxed set. I clipped them from the sprues...

...and assembled them.

Here's everything (except the cold one, who was made later) ready to be painted.

And here's everything primed with Citadel Chaos Black. You can see the tape on the Razorwings.

Nice! Always a pleasure to see someone get at less commonly represented parts of 40k. Can't wait to see them painted

I drybrushed everything with Citadel Dawnstone...

Great stuff Stargrave has some nice critters as well.

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.

I did some speed painting, relying mainly on washes, glazes, and some Contrast paint.

Ptera-squirrels WIP. A couple of washes and they're coming along nicely.

Swarms WIP. Oh no! There was too much pigment in the blue wash I used for the wings!

A quick drybrush with some white-blue paint toned things down to a more reasonable level.

Really cool project, love the razor wings in particular. The extra dry brush on the bugs worked well too

A little more progress on the swarms and on the ptera-squirrels.

This is excellent!! I always wanted to host a Killteam night with the referee as "The Deathworld". Now you just need a Cathachan Devil and an Ambull Nest. Maybe throw in a few plant species?

Ooh, nice stuff.

There were references in Chapter Approved to domesticated grox with automated laser-gun harnesses to protect from grox-rustlers. Could also be a fun conversion. Actually, come to think of it, the two Chapter Approved Creature Feature articles are both great for additional beasties.

Yeah, I’m going to use these for Inquisitor style games using the Kill Team rules.

The swarms are getting closer to done.

I applied a few washes to the groxen. They’re looking a bit too dark. Maybe a drybrush will help…

I don't find the groxes too dark, to be fair. But those eyes on the swarms... Scary!

Yeah, the groxen look fine in the photo, but they’re pretty murky-looking in person.

Awsum stuff! I love the beauty of nature, even more so when it's trying to make me its next gory meal!
Exalted, keep up the good work.

'Awsum' is the highest rating I can give something based on quality. Example: I would call it an 'Awsum' AWS-8Q instead of an 'Awesome'
