Even though GW is hands down the best model/game company in my own opinion, but I'm new to it.

I feel we all might of at some point put together some kind of Gundam or army tank, shoot maybe even an airplane or two.

Mine were Gundam and boats. So yes i am a deadliest catch fan. But I became sad when no models are released and a scale model to be made is over 2000 dollars and not even the boat I want. So I became inspired to kitbash an old pacific fleet battle ship and convert it into my favorite crab fishing boat, The Wizard.

I know this isn't necessarily warhammer or war game related, delete if not allowed, but I'm curious of other collectors and where they started and if they too had anything else on the side of wargames?

What I bought. Along with enough milliput to make a whole boat.

I started out painting plastic historical minis from I think a British company in the 1970's and later went on to 1/35th scale armor.
I used to do a lot of wooden boat models and a few custom builds. I would suggest looking into a few books on how to scratch build a wooden model of the boat you want.
You might even be able to find basic blue prints of the class of boat you want to build. There are resources out there for model boat builders, but I no longer have any links.

Huzzah! That is some amazing information! Yeah they are a lot of fun. I will definitely be looking into the wooden scratch building. That would be a blast. I plan on just using the hull of the model honestly (I suck with chicken wire) and custom building from there. Luckily the pacific fleet is what the wizard used. An old torpedo tester ship, and for 25 bucks i think i am within the field. Just some good front end tweeks for Bering sea ice crushing. I myself am very exited to hunt out some of this information. Thank you!

I will be researching what the 1/35 scale is and do you have any of those historical mini's to show off? I'd love to see some of the work!! Even a boat!!

I don't have the plastic historical ones anymore, but I'll see if I can dig out one of my Shermans for a picture.

D&D but I only just started with it, I take it this isn't considered a wargame but moreof a adventure thing, normally played with pen and paper and all..
I also used to -very rarely- paint miniature metal cars, not as a hobby but whenever I bought a new chevvy corvette 70s series on a market and disliked the paint damage.

I think my earliest model kits were a car of some sort, and a fighter (F-18 I think), apache attack helicopter. (all of which gave their lives/parts for RT vehicle madness) Another non-wargame kit was a visible V8, engine mostly made out of clear plastic with a small motor and lights so you could see how it worked once built.

Then I moved to D&D minis, Grenadear at first, but then Ral Partha and other manufactures. Back when we had real lead in our toys!

RT came out, and I started down that rabbit hole (still there) with a sideline of WHFB in 5th-6th, and intermittently adding to my undead force since AoS came out.

Oh man that's a blast isn't it! I was a dm for my family lol and I would make the maps out of cardboard and make em like 3d and scaled to like 1in is 5ft then made characters from clay and the wife n kids would play for hours and the kids love the little houses and dioramas I made. Thanks for the reminder. Ah that's cool I always envied the people who were able to restore old toys.

that's awesome, which undead faction are you building, I like them all. Been reading the chronicles of Nagash and I'm ready to collect all things dead. I want a mannefred von Carstien and the nighthaunt lady. Very cool characters!! Real lead in toys!! What a nice warm fuzzy feeling.

Heh. Real lead in the hobby room made from some strict habits. While I may drink while I work, never food. Although I’ve stopped religiously washing my hands after every session at the workbench.

My legions of the dead have their roots in the old “Undead” era, before they fractured into a zillion groups. So I’ve got vampires, ghosts, and mummies rattling around. I couldn’t pass on the nighthaunt in the soul wars box and have been slowly painting them since that came out, mostly one October at a time. Recently picked up a couple boxes so I could get them to conform to the spearhead force. So that’s my goal on the spook side, maybe fill them out for small games.

The core of my old list was a vampire-lead “undead bretonians” theme, which meshes well into soulblights. The Cursed City box helps reinforce that, and I’m working on getting that painted. Eventually I’ll grab their spearhead, but the Pile of Shame is already pretty full, so no rush.

Agree that Mannfred is a very cool mini. Painted him a while back when I was modernizing my old collection for the new ruleset. Even got him to the table once or twice.

unfortunately, I have not had the opportunity to play the Gravelords or the nighhaunt. I had opportunity to get their spearheads but instead I got some Stormcast Stormdrakes because i mean they are dragons. along with the seraphon because they were so darn interesting to play in TWW2 I had to get some.

Do they play as cool their lore makes them out to be?

I've got a few random military and sci-fi kits kicking around, but most are untouched. My first completed model was actually Polar Lights' Klingon D7 Battlecruiser model, which is a pretty decent kit and I do still have the model sitting on my dresser (I was 14 when I built and painted it, I think). I've also got a decent pile of car models, also unbuilt. I just don't have much time for non-wargaming models, as I've got so many wargaming projects going that I'm already swamped with things to build and paint.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700
Check out my P&M Blogs: ZergSmasher's P&M Blog | Imperial Knights blog | Board Games blog | Total models painted in 2024: 40 | Total models painted in 2025: 21 | Current main painting project: Warhammer 40k Leviathan set

Honestly, I’m the wrong person to ask about how they play. I’ve not played the new edition yet, and only and handful of games in prior versions of AoS. Almost all my fantasy time in in WHFB 5th edition, with a little spillover into 6th.

Undead hordes can be fun. Getting skeletons back is not just returning wounds to the unit (as was mostly the case in WHFB). Someone shooting you as you march across the table? Take casualties from the back, add them to the front. Get a little extra movement. Someone wander a little too close to the slow, grinding fight? Add a tendril of bones, consolidate, and drag them in.

Classically the rank and file can’t kill anything very well, but takes forever to grind down, and are slow. But the characters and special units have all the murder and movement. It looks like that’s still the case in the current edition. But I’m only working on theoreticals.

But I’m getting way off topic in a painting thread about non-wargaming models.

After I picked up aos I really put the others down as well. Been working on the boat and I forgot how terrible the quality of plastic and molds are for them. I should of just bought wood :(

Haha it's more of a thread to get people talking anyways! Find what we did and how we now seemed to have put them aside for the wargames. Kind of a nostalgic reflective meet n greet. So I'm totally cool with it

It's always good to keep a realistic amount of hobbies. Hat off to you, I seem to enjoy overwhelming myself XD
