after 9 pages, i thought I would start afresh. I am going to change my mind and argue that those two have the option of being taken as non-dedicated transports.

Through out all the codices I have read so far (and reread for about the fourth time), even when the transport option is included in the troops section it says in the description that it is taken as an upgrade. Neither the fish or CSM rhino does. The BBB differentiates between dedicate and non-dedicated specefically. Many entries in codices are specefically written to say that they are "dedicated"or "unit upgrade". These two aren't. We cannot really use intent, because we can have two opposite opinions of intent that carry equal weight.

What is left? Blasted RAW.

No where does it say in the CSM rhino entry (in the elites section) or the fish entry that this limitation applies. I went into my local FLGs and posed the question and got laughed at for being stupid. We then got the codices out - and this really surprised me, they all changed their minds. Once intent and background where rejected, the RAW was left.

I think the may problem is, like everyone in the FLGS, is most people think it shouldn't be. However that is not what RAW stated.

2014 will be the year of zero GW purchases. Kneadite instead of GS, no paints or models. 2014 will be the year I finally make the move to military models and away from miniature games.

Ok, if you can take a rhino or a devilfish as a non dedicated transport, then where do you put them on your Force Organization Chart? Do they each occupy a slot in the troop section or in the heavy support section. If you buy them and they count as troops, then they could fulfill my troop minimums? Buy 2 rhinos and I have my compulsory slots filled?

The BBB rules on Transports do not specify a location in the FOC where non-dedicated transports have to be taken. Presumably it's done by the section of the army list they are found in, for example, Land Raiders are in Heavy Support of the SM list so should be taken as Hvy slots.

Assuming the D'fish can be taken as non-dedicated, which is disputed, then it would be a troop slot as it's in the troops section of the list. (The basis of the argument you may have seen running to 9 pages in YMDC, is that it isn't a troop selection because it's a transport.)

Non-dedicated transports fill FOC slots so a legal Tau army could be chosen with 1 FCW squad, 1 Crisis suit commander and one D'fish.

As fro CSM, I don't have their codex but I would have thought it's not worth filling troops slots with Rhinos because they're not very good vehicles, whereas basic CSM and SM troops are good troops.

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

To be a non-dedicated transport it would take up an elites choice. Not saying anyone would necessarily do it but once you get passed the whole non-dedicated or dedicated thing you realise it is an option - just not the best one.

Haven't got my BBB with me but does this mean it can hold a table quarter?

Sorry, I missed that bit in your first post.

Non-dedicated transports count as vehicles and VPs and so on.
