Subject: GrimDork Hobby Time! Hobby time limit breaker! Many things accomplished, pictures inevitable!
@Carlos the irony is not lost on me I do fully intend to paint more deadzone scenery. The mediplex is 'done' save for blood splatter and signs, trying to decide how I want to do both. The watchtower is almost as far along, and the bumblebee building is only a step behind that.
@Azazelx Well, this is a colony, and the red/white are my corporation's military colors, I kind of figured the 'classic' white/red would work. I don't really want anything to look caring or comforting, the Warpathverse isn't a nice place I'll consider it though, I've been curious to work with such colors lately.
If you want stained yellow, you probably like my forge fathers? Keep an eye out then.
I don't have any AW coming either, almost added it to the second survey but opted for lots of hard plastic and many striders instead. Battle systems will come with a ridiculous amount of screens, displays, tables, chairs, possibly even counter tops (like a bar) and additional scatter terrain. It's been pushed back closer to the 2nd DZ shipment, but it'll come and be a stronger product for the waiting (hint hint mantic..). So between that and whatever I can come up with on my own, these building should get shinier and better detailed over time. Really looking forward to seeing what you come up with
Hmm I wonder if the Krylon camo is just happening to be from the plastic bond (forget the exact name) type of paint they make. I may have to look into some for priming found stuff, just in case. Good call
I'm in agreement about the rust showing through everywhere. I think it would look good, but it won't make a lot of sense. I'll probably leave the DZ panels fairly rustless, just around the bolts and additions. Full scratchbuilt junk terrain though.... rust away!
It's nice having the DZ terrain around to match things up with, for sure.
So as I alluded to, I've gone a bit off my proscribed path over the weekend. I'll elaborate more when there are pictures.

Anything you make Kustom is something unique that no one else has, that you've poured genius and heart into, and therefore trumps anything shiny and masss produced.
Hey guys, been a bit since I've done an update, so here we go. Got a hobby lobby in town. Woot! It's been fairly packed and probably will be for awhile, but I can still get hobby stuff locally now so that's excellent. I went today and picked up just a few things, one of which bears mention here (others were just some brushes, and some jersey cloth to practice aibrushing t-shirts ). I saw this thing a couple of weeks ago when at a hobby lobby out of town, passed, but wondered. Here are some pictures, form a decision on the value before reading further, if you like:
So yeah, that thing cost me six bucks. Tag was $9.99, eligible for the standard hobby lobby 40% off weekly coupon (by which I mean they seem to give me 40% off one item any time I bother to have my cellphone with me...). I'm not sure if it directly represents a particular warhammer tank especially well, but it's reasonably close to the right size for 28mm models. It doesn't look particularly high-tech, but then neither do most 40k tanks. I think if you wanted to take it seriously, you'd need to hot/super glue some of the connections, do a bit of gap filling and finishing... but for six bucks.... sheesh. I may paint this up in corporation colors to match my marines. The warpath kickstarter will probably see them getting reinforced with loads of slick scifi tanks... but I can always add rust and do a little creative battle damage to convert it into scenery after the fact.
Ok, next up is some deadzone terrain I've been working on and finalizing. Everything is still liable to get signs and labels, but I'm planning to design my own Warpath/Infinity high-tech/future sets rather than sticking to the standard yellow warning signs and the like. Everything should be table ready finished, though I reserve the right to add further detail to everything later on
First up we have what I'm calling Tower Five:
Possibly my favorite angle (boom phrasing!). This is more or less a watchtower with some barricades meant to serve as a checkpoint for foot traffic and light vehicles. I may work out a hazard striped broken toll gate kind of thing some time. I'll also work out some free standing toll/no trespassing/etc signs to put in the long section between the barricades.
I think I mentioned getting some stencils... right? The door missed getting dipped, I'll fix that the next time I get out the can.
Obligatory action shots.
Thoughts?
I'll be back with some more miscellaneous pieces soon.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Alrighty, here are a few more:
Looks like one or more folk reading the warning were added to the body count...
Added some blood.
I don't think any of the previous shots showed off this little first aid kit, cut it from one of those sheets of labels and such.
One of the dumpsters got some gore as well.
Looks like someone tried to retreat up the ladder but didn't get very far..
But someone did live long enough to make a mess up here..
Still need to finish the door for this one, added a little blood out front, guess they didn't make it in..
What in the hell happened in this place?
Ok, think I'm tapped out for pictures. Comments and criticism?

Nice stuff, the scenery looks cool as ever. That tank can't be bad for the price, even if you just use is a wreck for more cover in DZ I doubt you'd find a much cheaper option, and it looks 'clean' enough to fit in with the Corp stylistically.

Thanks guys, I think I'm getting reasonably close to a modestly laid out deadzone board load of painted terrain. I'm gonna do some gluing to make the tank sturdier, then look into scifiwargamifying the main cannon and secondary gun a bit. I'll probably leave it intact and paint it, but still use it as just a piece of terrain since nothing I'm liable to play uses tanks (or if I play 40k I'd be best off using the official profiles to be fair). Once I get honest to goodness corporation tanks... it will probably get junked, and be all the cooler for it

The tank is so potentially cheap (only had two and it requires a coupon) I could see nabbing many for me kind of project. Tank scrap yard ,maybe? Deadzone building with a large crane magnet and so on? Maaaaybe.
Join us....Join uuu'uuusssssss. I like how they give my models a solid 'wherever you go, there you are'. I hear they don't do so well for tournament paint comps but that has no bearing on me.
The little one is interfering, but I'm trying to get my 'secret project' dipped so I can seal and display it by tomorrow or early weekend on the outside. Then you guys can tell me if I'm crazy.

Just wait till I've got my hands on some Mars Attacks civilians, oddly bemused grandma, poor kid, some guy, and a couple of chesty vixens being chased around by murderous plague!
Used to be the stockator was only 60 points, i think they're 75 now. Wonder how you would model sponsons on that tank, a couple of marines sitting on the sides with the heavies in hand? I did put them side by side, the Shade is around 20-30% longer or so, with a similar width, the predator is a bit taller overall and the turret on the Shade is again a bit bigger. Maybe 20% or so?
Supposedly there are three tanks, but the other two looked a lot more WW2ish. They were kind of off to the side of the other scale model stuff at the end of the aisle, near by some other snap fit stuff like X-wings, and some enterprise kits.

The last photos of your terrain look fantastic, I really love the narrative that plays out. I love my games to develop some form of story all of their own and your terrain setup would help that immensely. The growing wariness of the troops as they investigate where everyone went and the suspense as they find more and more evidence of conflict.....

I'm really looking forward to expanding the terrain collection and getting more pictures like those. I need some set dressing too. Tables, chairs, shelves for the walls, counters and so on. Battle systems will help but I'll do some on my own as well.
I rather like the first gen rampaging outside the window in that last shot.

You know, if I had access to $6 tanks like that (and my DeadZone/MA buildings), I'd probably build one myself.
The red and white of the Med centre and our corp troops is actually one of the reasons I thought it would go well as a command centre. Your forgefather look is pretty much exactly how I'd like to see one of those buildings done as well. The perfect aged, oily workshop look. Tower 5 looks great as well.
Can I hassle you? I['d like to see what your results look like from doing this with some of your scenery:
Tank Graveyard. 2x2 board... maybe 9 tanks in 3x3 formation. Enforcers vs Plague Hide and Seek of Death...
DO IT!
(actually, I might try something like this myself. A Deadzone setup with very little height but a ton of cover and LOS blockers, almost like a grid. Stay in the open too long or make a wrong move and you get eaten/blasted. Sounds fun.)

@Azazelx, I'm terribly interested in your tank graveyard, watching your blog for updates like a starving hawk I'm starting to agree with you about the mediplex being better cast as a Corporation marine HQ. Considering that pretty hard going forward, though I kind of wish I had included some black in that case. Though I guess black is for armor and the building is pretty basic.
I'll give that salt weathering video a look, and if it doesn't disagree with me, I'll give it a try. I've kind of wanted to for a while now anyway.
Nobody gonna put the breaks on my dwarf-bound crazy train?
Thoughts on the tank? Once I come up with a proper clan/faction name for them and do some sketching/planning I intend to personalize the tank a bit. If I can manage it... I want to duplicate the dwarf face masks that some of the FF leaders and the Iron ancestor have:
Kind of like those but a bit more... i dunno... dwarf face. Basically I want to put a dwarf face on the front of the tanks. Standard set-teeth grimace, though a vindicator might have parted teeth with the cannon sticking out But, I'll have to do some planning and tinkering first.
The tank also needs some rust, weathering on the tracks, and so on... but this gives you the idea and would be enough to start with on the table. I have enough plastic bodies that, when combined with restic and metal specialists, I can do 4 teams of 10 with a special and heavy weapon so as to fully represent a unit of tactical marines.
Thought about doing this with the enforcers but I kind of want to take my time working on those, and most of my dwarfs are hard plastic and they paint super fast, giving me an army more quickly.
I've also finished another building, aside from blood and posters and such. I'll try to get a shot or two of it this morning but there may be delays. I tried something a little different with the dipping and I think the results are possibly better. I'll need your thoughts on it. Basically Instead of blasting every surface with a ton of dip with the sponge brush, then brushing it off and disposing of the extra and so on... I squeegeed most of the dip off of the brush after dipping it in the miniwax, so the application was almost more of a drybrush with the dip rather than a dunk/wash.
I think I counted two spots that ran at all, compared to many, and it still has that grimy feel to it. I think it's got some more streaks than the others since there was less dip to flow out and mitigate them... but it's a lot cleaner of a dirty look.... if that makes sense
Try to pop back with a picture or two here in a minute.

The Limited-edition WFB Dwarf Army Standard bearer would have been perfect, but was released 14 years ago so naturally it's not exactly available or cheap to come by. (even at the time).

Well, black is also piss-easy to add on later. Just don't overdo it or it will mess up the nice aggro feel of the room.

I theoretically know how to do it, but my one attempt failed miserably (small panels on a Dreadnought's legs). I think a bunch of scenery-tank will learn me much more gooder. I'm also going to watch a ton more video tutorials on it to pick up the little nuances and differences on how people do it before my tanks turn up.

Clearly not. My suggestion was going to be to darken the chassis around the tracks, but I see you've got that planned anyway. If you really wanted to go to crazytown, you could get a Whirlwind/razorback hatch-plate, cut one of those quad-autocannon forgefather not-dreadnoughts in half and use it as a fancy-future flak turret. Which would be awesome.

Nice find at Hobby Lobby, that tank is basically a M-48 with a fancy paint job.
I wonder what you plan to copy?
The buildings look weathered and gritty, like a well established colony ought to, too new and they would look like they got there a mere few years or months ago.

I do like the blood spatter on the Public Safety Notice. Nice touch.
Hmm... Dwarf faces on tanks? I think cause of the style it'd be pretty easy for you to pull off, since they like to use lots of geometric shapes. You could get a bunch of shapes and literally 'build' a design onto the front of the tank. I'll have to look at more dwarven iconography.

@shas, thanks. I picked up a second tank today and may start working on them soon, they make pretty good LoS blocking bits. I might not copy anything, I think it's copyright infringement
@CC Whoever created it had just a little bit on there but it was too bright and too minimal to get my point across I think the dwarf faces should be fairly simple too, I just need to do some sketching and some testing. Need to look around and see if anyone else has done something similar with their orks or fantasy dwarfs that I could borrow from. But that's what I'm planning, either strips of card, or some other shapes. Just something that gets the idea across y'know.
@Azazelx; Hey now, isn't it technically breaking some kind of copyright laws to use instant mold to make forms of anything you didn't make yourself (and that's actually copyrighted, probably ok for simple geometric shapes and such)? I'd seriously consider using it as such but it always seemed a bit dodgy, as they say.
I do have some, but I rarely make something unique of my own to copy.
Thanks for the inspiration on the Dwarf faces in any case though, it may be harder to do by scratch than I'm thinking. The general idea is something more along the lines of this: A big face on the front of the vehicle, but dwarf, possibly made out of scrap iron repurposed. Almost Orky, but a little cleaner. My dwarfs are pretty poor so they do a lot of salvage reclamation and so on.
As to the Iron Ancestor as a super dwarfy turret... I've had the idea before, just not quite in that direction:
I'm seriously considering cleaning up my dreads and adding them to the list of marine stuff I need to clear out, to be replaced by Iron Ancestors instead. Not sure you can get $20 for plastic AOBR dreads these days, but if I could (or even get close) that's easily a direct trade to Iron ancestors. Maybe not with the doomstorm upgrade kit though (lets you make them Mortis/rifleman dreads). If I really do get a bunch of my dwarfs painted and marine vehicles to go with them... I may spring for a trio of Jotum cannons, all three of them weigh in cheaper (and possibly lighter than!) a space marine Thunderfire cannon, and it may be possible to use them for other things as well... like super-cannons for certain land raider variants. Or emplacement cannoni.
I wonder if anyone would be sore if Instead of using the proper sponsons for a predator (who uses sponsons any more these days...), I had a couple of dwarfs leaning out on the side ramp things toting heavies. I guess to be in the spirit of things I could convert them to have heavy bolters too...
I got another Shade today, the only one they had left but a dude was stocking that aisle so we'll check again soon (not tomorrow though, curse the churchly nature of hobby lobby!). The coupon is viable 1/day/customer, so I should be able to use it all I like to obtain cheapo tanks. Feel a bit bad though, starting at $10 even coming from china with lead paint they probably aren't getting too terribly much of a margin from them. Maybe I'll buy some candles sometime to make up for it, you get like 90% profit on those sometimes...
Oooh, one last thing, need to get these out before I forget. Been thinking of some more billboards/adwalls (I'll explain those one I make one )

From what I understand? No. You're not breaking any sort of law unless you're copying something with the intent to distribute or make money off of it.
But I'm not a lawyer, so take what I say with a grain of salt.
Preferrably that cool lava-salt that's all black and charcoal like. Its great on potatoes.
Really, I think for the most part buying one of something and then making a ton of copies from press molds is like a grey area of the hobby. I prefer to make stuff myself, or give money to the talented people who make stuff I think is cool. But then there's things like Space Marine Legs, which you never have enough of despite having a trillion of everything else. Soooo... whatever. We've all thought about it.
Enjoy the hobbying! I'd be doing the same, but I have to work today and then I'm running a WoD game and cooking dinner. Busy Saturday.

For the dwarf faces, how about getting some thin plasticard and making something similar to the front of the Iron Ancestor by layering it a couple of times over a base plate that fits on a Rhino front, and casting that? Am I making sense?
I like the poster ideas, I'm in the process of planning some similar stuff myself.

@Paradigm, you are making sense, and this is what I'm thinking. Maybe cast it, maybe don't depending on the complexity.
I like your poster ideas, may have to steal
@CC sounds busy, but at least there's a game involved, and dinner is often required to function
@shas, yeah i kind of figure it works that way... kind of like burning copies of cds you bought on itunes, or making car copies of your disks so when they inevitably ruin, it was just the copy.

Thinking about the plasticard idea, it might not need casting. With a sharp knife and a rule, you should be able to throw something together in about 10 minutes, and it wouldn't be worth the effort to cast it. You've also got me thinking about doing something similar for my Rhinos, chapter icons and the like...

Mine is shaping up to be a bit more 2d, I think I'll use the windshields of the rhino for eyes, with plated beard below them, and possibly a hat or other top extending slightly above them. Pictures later, still fairly rough atm.
Hmm... I may have determined a purpose for the existence of a couple of my smaller structures... Japanese style vending machines kind of. But with more stock. Not just soup or soda or toys or... other things... but daily goods. And private, so nobody can jank your cred number/ID/etc. So half of the little 3" cube building would be dominated by a kiosk, something I'll have to design to look like a japanese vending machine, or one of those nifty new best buy vending machine things...
Like this, but with even cooler/scifi-ier gadgets. Just a bit of everything even. Ooooh, because it's the future... it could have a handy 3d printer port on one side, so you're really just calling up a list of templates. Wonderful, glad I decided to type this out. I'll probably develop an image so I can save it and print out copies
Dwarf Tank Beard 1.0 nearly complete.

I think I've also determined that it's almost as cost effective to order the forge father things that I'd like direct from Mantic, than from a 3rd party retail. Not to mention the sweet mantic cases I'd get with a direct order. AND the mantic points... not to mention direct support. The Jotumm cannon thing 3 pack is $40, but nobody else sells that, discounted rates would probably put you closer to 45 from a quick scan. The Iron Ancestors are 20 and 25 for doomstorm (and since it doubles up nicely for a rifleman, and it's an upgrade bit not a replacement... worth the $5). I can get IA for 15-16 and doomstorms for a little less than $20 but once you figure up shipping... Again not to mention the cases and points.
Still, that's a ways off. I've got future kickstarters and GenCon willy-nilly spendings to feed before that can happen.
Ok, tankbeard 1.0 complete I'll take pictures if I get the chance.

Not sure. I don't think so, though. I first learned about (and how to) press mould from an article in White Dwarf where they showed and encouraged hobbyists to do it to customise their models. I figure if GW says it's ok, then it must be. Not sure if anyone will break down your door for doing it, though. More seriously, I don't think it's an issue that anyone would take issue with. GW has shown off models with press-moulded details many times and described them as such, including GD reports. Scibor's whole thing is being "inspired by" GW designs. And you'd be making.. I dunno? A couple of faces at most? It's more of an advertisement for Scibor than anything else. And you'd not be selling them as "conversion kits" so there's no "for profit" involved.
