So a mordheim campaign is coming up and I am planning on joining. Only problem is I have no models and no experience and little money. Anyways I was planning on buying a free company box, so I want to make sure if this is a good idea for mercenaries. Do they come with pistols and crossbows and such too?

Also, stuck on which mercenary group to play. Might go marrianburg? What do you guys think?

The free company is the sprue that came in the original Mordheim box (except the current WHFB box gives you 20 as opposed to 10) so it has pretty much all of the options you'd want. Pistols, swords, axes, clubs, two handed swords, knives, bows, and crossbows. You won't be able to get spears unless you pick up Empire State Troops or convert your guys with toothpicks or something.

I play Marienburg and I like the extra 100gc for buying tons of bodies, but Reikland is equally good. I've never played any of the other mercenaries.

Are you going to be playing with the original Mordheim rules, or one with house rules?

Because without a house rule to improve armour it's a bit expensive for what it does, considering anything over strength 3 reduces your armour save and there are a few weapons/special rules that increase it further. Whereas the skills 'Step Aside' or 'Dodge' (which Marienburg has access to) are unmodified 5+ saves, although you'll need to wait for a skill advance to get them.

You might want to consider getting one more Youngblood and Champion, too. Heroes are the only ones that can search for Wyrdstone, so it's best to take a full compliment when starting out.

Good choice with the Crossbow armed Marksmen - they'll be a good threat to any opponent

Braces of pistols aren't bad at all - being able to shoot every turn isn't to be sneezed at, and if other people in the campaign are using armour then the -1 to armour saves will come in handy

wouldn't it be -2 from str 4 and armor piercing?

Except they're really not protected. As was mentioned, St4 or higher means the armor is pretty useless (it looks good on paper, but does little in the game). Add to that the basic rules around critical hits, which ignore armor saves altogether, means that those funds are wasted when they're not being used to buy extra heroes who can get you more money. For late-game, when you're swimming in money (if you're lucky), then sure, kit them out with armor, but its wasted early on.

The general principle is "strength is cheaper than armor" in the game. A halberd or two handed weapon is cheap as chips compared to armor of any kind.

A big caveat: a lot of this advice depends on how your local community plays - the "role-players" will give out armor and swords and all kinds of kit and run 8 or so guys. The "competitive" (for lack of a better word) players will start with 12 guys with twin club, or club and dagger (or 15 skaven w slings), and swamp you in close combat. Unless you're elves (or the human mercs with BS4 shooters), shooting is situational and mostly keeps your opponent honest.

I love Mordheim, have been in many campaigns, and love the basic human mercs. I've always had success with them. And I loves me my blunderbuss for breaking up hordes

Alright part two of my list that is a bit better.

Mercenary Captain Ryan 'mad king' Haywood (light armor, shield, x2 pistols, sword)-125g

Champion Micheal 'Mogar' Jones (two handed weapon, heavy armor, helmet)-110g

Youngblood Gavin Free (shield, axe, blunderbuss)-55g

Marksman Ray (free dagger, crossbow)-50g

Marksman Jack (free dagger, crossbow)-50g

Marksman Geoff ( x2 pistols, Helmet, Axe)-70g

Swordsman Jeremy (shield, light armor, sword)-70g

Swordsman Matt ( Shield, light armor, sword)-70g

I got rid of heavy armor and gave gavin a blunderbuss, but i'm wondering if I should just get a second youngblood? or get rid of matt and jeremy's armor for one? and should I give Ryan a great sword too in place of his shield, or maybe a mace?
