So this idea is somewhat similar to the Horus Heresy sub-forum idea up here, but it felt different enough to warrant its own thread.

I wonder if both WHFB and 40k could get "Oldhammer" sub-forums to allow discussing of previous editions. I think it would be pertinent for both games, especially with WHFB if it ends up drastically different. But beyond those upcoming changes, it can make some of those "does anyone still play 3rd/4th/5th/etc." threads into a more productive locations, and focus on the community out of disaffected/out-of-date/curious players.

I just feel there has been a notable uptick in people seeking alternatives to putting their GW models to use and thought this could be a useful board. Thanks!

It's a good idea, but is only feasible if there is enough of a following for the older editions for those sections to get an appreciable amount of traffic.

Not sure how to judge that, though, other than creating the sections and seeing if anyone posts in them...

Well IMO it seems that AOS is going to be an entirely new game so leaving WHFB forums alone as they are and adding an AOS section would be most plausible. Should WHFB loose the following it has now then it be moved down below near LOTR, other specialists games, etc.

It seems as if it is something that will need to be done anyway unless the decision is to just rebrand the current forums as AOS instead of creating new ones for AOS

I agree: leave the Warhammer section alone and just add an AoS sub section.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

It could also remain in a single forum imo. It is not like the WHFB forum is so busy threads get buried quickly.

Just put an Age of Sigmar subfolder into the WHFB section.

Wouldn't the unsupported games be the place for them?

If one game, whether WHF 8th or 40k 2nd or whatever starts dominating then that's the time to spin it off.

Except that no word has come down that WHFB is being killed off. Age of Sigmar is supposedly a 3rd core game that uses WHFB models. We'll have to see how it shakes out.

Hold your horses. As Breotan already said, AoS isn't a new version of WHFB, it's another game, a new franchise GW introduces. What will happen to WHFB is still open. It might be abandoned or it might be picked up.

And since AoS currently uses your WHFB figures, it might be a better idea to just put a new sub-forum than a dedicated group of AoS forums. At least until we see how things are going.

Too late for that.

Did the entire WHFB section of the board just suddenly get renamed to AoS? Because that's severely messed up - a good way to discourage further WHFB posts, thus killing discussion of it further here.

It suddenly happened over a week ago, but yes, the WHFB section was retitled to reflect the current game.

It's still the place to carry on WHFB-related discussion for now. If it turns out that enough people actually want to carry on discussing some version of the dead game, then some sort of separate section will be figured out.

It was mildly depressing, to say the least, when I saw the change. It hasn't grown on me. I'd be a huge fan of having separate AoS and WHFB sections.

I hear you, but nothing is set in stone. Instead, we will be looking to see how people are utilizing the forums moving forward and in a few weeks or months if trends start to show, then we can definitely make a more permanent change.

However, we generally do not create forums to try to drive discussion/traffic, as our experience has shown that this doesn't work. Instead, we look to see where forums are TOO popular with conflicting discussion types and look to split them into different forums at that point.

It has yet to be seen how much actual discussion people will be interested in having about legacy WHFB in the wake of AoS being the only Fantasy system GW seems to be looking to provide support for.

So if you are interested in having a distinct WHFB legacy forum, then my best advice is to keep having legacy WHFB discussions and get other users to join you in doing the same.

Perhaps amend the title or description of the existing "Games Workshop Specialist & Unsupported Games" board to include older versions of the game including both Fantasy and 40k?

Because, at the end of the day, WHFB 8th and earlier editions now fall under the unsupported bracket...

That is, of course, one potential solution. However, it is a little different because they aren't unsupported games and therefore history has shown most people interested in discussing those games will tend to want to discuss the most current version (AoS, in this case), with the few outlying discussion being fine to sit inside the forums about the 'current' game.

That's what happens with 40K discussions about previous editions...people ask questions and discussions happen about those older editions within our existing 40k forums, but those tend to be pretty rare. If legacy WHFB turns out to be different and there are way more discussions going on about the old edition, then it will make sense to look into splitting up the forums.
