Elite Tyranid Warrior

I've just got back the 2010 UK School's League, the Yorkshire regions in Wakefield.
It was my second and last time there, and the 3rd time my school has sent team(s).
My team (Thirsk A) won 40k, getting 74 points.
My thoughts:
Tables . 3x4 is NOT enough @ 600p, as it really overpowers outflank (Although no one there abused this) and damages manoeuvrability.
Terrain ranged from sparse to " WTF, why is this stupid hill covering the ENTIRE deployment zone in DoW" for our SW player.
It had the usual mob of little people with standard, uncompetitive armies and the rules knowledge of a sausage.
Less decent players than last year.
WFT was with the scoring system. We got 36/36 battle points, and got 38! on softscores (not sure what the total SS was, but it was pretty high)
I like the battlepoints system better than last year (it was 3/1/0 this year, 3/2/1 last time)
Got put agaist 3 of Thirsk B for the third round, which sucked. This also put them down from a clear second, well above the rest the field, to a draw over 2nd. (After R2, we had 24, they had 20).
Teams: 7 WH40k, 1 WHFB , 2 LotR
---Yeah, so the WHFB team looked like they had a really boring time, just playing random games
---Sucked to be the Thirsk LotR team, who just had to rotate around the other team, who walked all other them. (Although, to be fair, they got 1 more battle point than I expected them to. Pity they only got 1 battlepoint)
A couple of nicer armies (shout out to the Red Mordant IG player, who was probably the best player who wasn't from Thirsk), very nicely painted Tyranids and Necron armies. Pity both players sucked.
To the GW staff - If the tourney starts at 10, logic dictates that you should have, you know, opened the shop before 10. Also, they took a VERY long time to add up the scores.
Missions - Why did they change from the ones we were told we were going to be playing?
Unlike last year, most armies were painted which was nice, although I have my doubts about how many of them were painted by the players.
It appeared one school had written the lists etc FOR their teams, and so they had little idea what to do. Also, we caught 3! people using illegal army lists. 2 were marines, running Heavy’s/Specials in 5 man squads, which was easily resolved before the start. However, the 3rd, an IG player belonging to the school who had their lists written for them, had only 1 Troop. (He got his first game disqualified). When I took this up with their teacher (the one who had written the lists), trying to avoid getting the judges involved, he flat out told me that I was an idiot, and there was no way IG could run 2 troops at 600p.
Yeah.
I pointed out that there were 2 other IG lists, including MY OWN, both perfectly legal.
He just looked at me, so we took it to the judges.
Army break down:
28 40k players:
2 Orks
2 Tau
1 Tyranid
1 Eldar
2 CSM
3 IG
2 Necron
1 CDaemons
Lots of loyalist marines of various flavours (inc. 3 SW and 1 BT)
Unlike last year, no WH, DH or DE
Although I moan, I had a good time, and I look to Nottingham.
Anyone else attend/attending a Regional?
Anyone else going to be at Nottingham?

It a tounament (although its called a league) that any school club (13-18 year olds) that is registered with GW (which is a simple form on their website) can enter a 4 person team(s) into.
3 (WH40k, WHFB, LotR) tournaments run side by side, with each player getting 3 games, and then each teams total is totted up to find the winner.
The 3 winning teams (one for each system) from the regionals (of which there are 12, I think) go on to the Finals at Warhammer World, Nottingham.
As I think I mentioned in my OP, the numbers vary. Last year it was around 10/3/3 teams in WH40k, WHFB, LotR respecivly, but this year was the lowest we've seen it, at only 7/1/2.
They change the rules every year (increasing the points values the last two years running, and changing the battle points and softscoring). This is a bit of a quibble of mine, as they cannot seem to make up their mind. Certainly I understand why they raise the points values, and I liked the last battle points change (from 3/2/1 to 3/1/0), but certainly soft scores were crazy this time round (not that it seemed to make a difference to the top 3 placeing, at least).

I was there! I think you were refering to our school when you said that they had their lists written for them. Only team B. Team A (Me included) all wrote and painted our armylists ourselves, so please pay more attention before you knock a whole school.
On more positive notes, I agree with you thoroughly. The points system sucked, the boards were too small, and there was little or bad terrain on every board. Have fun at Nottingham!

I must admit I didn't know that school even had 2 teams, but sorry if I caused any offence. You must admit though, its not excatly good form to do that.
Are you the SW player who played our SW player in round 1 (or was it 2?)

Yes, I am That was a fun game, it was in round 1.
Our teacher was writing their army lists, because all of team B had all started less than 3 months before (Apart from one of them who started in September, and he wrote his own), so this was actually their first army list and they had no idea how to write one, so our teacher had to write them. The girl on team B hadn't actually started, she's a fantasy player, and was just filling in because we didn't have enough people for two teams (7 had signed up). I hope that explains it.

Yeah, it looked pretty good. Bless our SW player, he didn't finish a game without losing at least half his force. His second round game was really funny. He tried to storm the Tau castle, got his ass broadsided off and spent turns 4-7 hiding in buildings getting shot at. (He won, as he had 2 objectives the the Tau castles 1, which will teach him not to have anything remotely mobile).
It was a bit daft of your teacher to write the IG player an Illegal list, though. (Poor kid, I think we were a bit harsh to him about it, although at that point we though he'd written his list)

I was a bit shocked at my teacher, it was a bit daft. If you want to know what happned to me, second round I murked this poor kid who had obviously only just started. I felt quite bad afterwards actually. Third round was a VERY close one, but I managed to scrape a win.

Heh, I got a red one last year. We got a choice this year, blue or green.
However, when I compaired to dice, I saw a MAJOR flaw.
The red 2009 one (and I'm told the 2008 ones as well) replace the '1' with a Aquila bearing the letters SL on its chest.
However, the 2010 dice replaces the '6' with the SL Aquila.

hey, im one of the team's who got through from the wales/south west england regionals. Your regional went pretty much the same as ours, a load of kid's who had obviously been playing for about 5 months (but actually wrote their lists themselves). we had 32 people in total turn up (better than last years 9 ). see you at the regionals (we're the BT/chaos/blue 'nids/bloodletters).

well I was at the too man I need some practice lost 3 times with my wolves. I did better last year when I was forced to use them as standard marines. havn't gamed for about 8 months and it realy showed. so I went into games workshop today and did a 1000 v 1000 pts (he decided to split his force 50 50 eldar and nids) I killed 5 squads and lost no squads although I did loose 11 claws. still it went much better.

My team is through too - with only 3 people, one of which had never played 40k before, but had an army. In otherwords, we had an automatic loss every set of games, but pulled through. The sheer amount of orks! I liked the chnge in rules this year - we were only halted last year, due to this ... annoying ... kan army, and one of the opposing team's passionate cheating - telling one of our less experienced players that tanks get locked in combat! See you in the finals.

They let you play with 3 people? And you got through with only 2 people who could play?
Wow, I thought NYorks was bad, but there were 3 good teams there, and most people had a basic grasp of the rules.
There were very few Orks in NYorks - only our Ork player (who ran horde) and a semi-mech army.
The semi mech player SUCKED, and got tabled in 2 turns . Yeah, so he lost a BW, and said all the models inside were dead. His trukk sat in assault range of our SM's bikers for 2 turns, and just sat there and ate lead.
NYorks? TOO MANY SPACE MARINES
I think it was 18 MEQ armies (14 of which were ISM of varing flavours). Sadly, 3 codex's were unused, where as last year, I think every codex had at least one player. Heh, so long as I fight the Nids/'letters I'll be happy. I get sick of normal slog of SM, SW, CSM, SM,Necrons, SW ad infinitum.
Although, I'd like to fight CD, as I've never done so before (same for DE, but I think I'd get hammered by a good DL /Blaster spam list)

Yeah, my list suffered from at lot of "well, it would be kickass awsome, if I didn't play MEQs every round", so I may change it a bit as well.
What would you spend 130 points on (already have 1HQ+2Troops)?

@ black antelope
the reason for the symbol on the dice being different is because GW have gone to a different company to make them this year (for cost effectivenes) after all it is a free tourny.
im guessing that since you played on 3X4 boards that there was 2 games on each 4X6 board because the store running it didnt have enought boards, room or both. which isnt their fault!
as for taking long tim to count the scores you say that there was 10 teams there (7, 40k 2, lotr 1, fantasy) thats 40 kids all trying to give there scores in probably at the same time.
if you dont think the quality of the competition was very good
"uncompetitive armies and the rules knowledge of a sausage."
why dont you save up some money and enter a propper tourney and see who looks like a sausage then.
and the points system for last year was (3/2/1) for win draw lose because even the realy bad teams and new players will score some points.... do you think a brand new team will bother coming back and try again if they got 0 points but the winners got 36!
and your extra 2 points would have been for sportsmanship or best painted. (or both). so congrats =) i got best painted army at school league in fantasy in 2008
im sorry to be so aggresive but im good friends with the person who does pretty much all the organisation for the tourney on her own! and i know how much efort she realy puts in to let kids enjoy there hobby as much as they can. and it just makes me mad when people complain about it.

Demon of greed, I agree with you (if your on about Bek Hawkby) she's been a godsend to my team during the run up to this, helping with my team leaders various enqueries But I think that I prefered last years points system mainly because it actually let the losing teams gain points.
But anyway 1 month to go until the finals, so I shall see whoever's gotten through there! Good luck to you all
