Hey All You Veterans!
My friends and I are just starting into WFB we are long time 40k players, so we have a grasp on good ole Warhammer, but I definitely wanted to get some opinions on the best way to start up an army. I am looking to play WoC. I was thinking of playing a single god army, and Nurgle's just plain neat, but would this be hurting myself if I limited myself to a single god (I am not against multiple gods/marks)?
Also, what types of units would be a good initial investment? I was thinking a block of warriors with hounds following them up the flanks. Not sure if this is viable.
As far as the more expensive units, I was thinking Knights of Chaos, maybe some chosen?
As far as playstyle, in 40k I am very much a get in your face with melee quickly and brutally.
Thanks in advance for all the advice guys!

A typical WoC army will use Warriors, Marauder Horsemen with flails and Knights as the main combat units. Hounds are useful for redirecting charges, taking table quarters and blocking LOS to units but don't have much combat value.
The mark of Nurgle is not bad, but its a bit expensive. The marks of Slaanesh and Khorne are popular for their protection from psychology. Sorcerers are best marked with TZ or Nurgle.
Next step is to decide on an infantry army or a cavalry army. Blocks of warriors with supporting marauders + chariots and a few cav units work for me. Some lists focus on all Marauder horsemen + Knights + expensive characters and do not use infantry at all.

Awesome and thanks!
Just knowing my playstyle I would think more mobile is better for me, but then again, if they are an army that can take a few hits I wouldn't mind being infantry either.
Is there a best of both worlds type? Or is it better to focus?

Armybook first, above all else. Get that asap.
Theres somewhat of a middle, but not really.
You can't get 3 blocks of 18 warriors and 4 units of knights, the knights will be atleast 240 points (more if nurgle) each.
On the other hand, 1-2 units of knights, and maybe 1-2 units of horsemen is fine along with your warriors and some characters, but you won't fit in much else.

If you want to go mobile i think then the nurgle or the khorne are the best.
To control a Khorne army however requires some skill and hound usage not to get your knights carried away chasing eagles (or something similar) around the board.
Basic when playing WoC are hounds. I take 4x5 every time. They dont cost anything, they can redirect, capture quarters and all the manner of disrupting but mostly blocking LoS.
In mobile armies you are limited to pretty much one core choice which are the horsemen. I play all Khorne so i include flails and light armour. This combination costs 110 points and is quite killy imo. Slaneesh ones are good too with throwing axes and/or spears + maybe armour. 5 or 6 per units is ideal.
BTW in a 1000 pt game against my friends lizardmen one of those units killed 800 pts of his army. They got painted the same day as reward.
Special... oh the knights. Dont try to fit in more than two units in games under 2250 or so. Always take 6 or 7 so you can suffer some casaulties and hit your enemy with full front rank. Khorne with war banner or Nurgle with banner of rage seem the best options. Dont give them lances, they suck.
For heroes: in games of 1500+ you need a caddy (mounted with 2+ save or not). You should include one killy hero, that can either machine hunt and go by himself (slaneesh, tzeentch) or a combatitive one that goes with knights or alone if no ranged threat spotted. My favoration of khorne leads me back to juggernaut + hero + axe of khorne + shield. He lack invul but... who cares.
Rare choice should be taken only in battles larger than 1500 because 1500 is like 3x horsemen, 2x knights, 2x hero and some hounds. I find shaggoth being the best because of his line breaking ability and his great model.
Other great option is a hellcannon which all players love because of its... awesomness? is it?

Thanks for the write ups everyone!
Looks like this is definitely a good army for me, seems like it is versatile enough to be able to run sloggers or cavalry.
They are pretty decent in magic too eh?

It is versatile but low on model count (unless you are running marauders only). You need to know how to use your powerhouses to best effect. Oh and knights+ good rolls are near invulnerable.
WoC can have good magic. Tzeentch spam, some nurgle support or terror/fear/slaneesh magic can work. (beware undead and things ItP with the last one) Tzeentch works best i think but you need loads of casters and loads of marauders.

Well! Went to my local gaming store and bought the army book and some warriors!
I can feel the taint overtaking me already!
I will prolly be on again soon with some quick lists I threw together, so anyone with opinions and experience in WoC is more than welcome to pick them apart.

Id go with a shaggoth over a giant. Playing against giants I find they are really hit or miss and are fairly lackluster against elf armys

Yeah, but don't forget, Chaos Giant of Slaanesh ASF, which is useful vs all bar High Elves

Has a shaggoth done anything for you, Grim? They seem so terrible in so many ways, starting with their staggering point cost, compared to any other big monster really. All of the new beast monsters are 10 points cheaper than a shaggy with gw, yet all of them are leagues better. If the shaggy had stubborn like the two fightier beast monsters, then we'd be talking. Since it doesn't, it has to fight units with 0-low CR, which means small elite units (knights or such) or chaff - though perhaps he can stand up against other monsters? Any kind of block will easily beat him, as probability sucks his attaks away ... So double-charging with shaggy + friends becomes the name of the game, but that's always a bit more difficult to pull off and also robs the shaggy of his major benefit, high movement.
For my money, the giant is superior to the shaggoth. Cheaper, can beat anything, dies just as quickly to serious shooting (though the shaggoth gets some armor against small arms, which is admittedly what drops my giants), and is more entertaining by far.

Shaggoth is cavalery supporter. He is a linebreaker and is as fast as your knights. You need to set up a flank charge along with your knights charging multiple units so you can kill the unit, overrun with the shaggoth and get another round of combat with him.

If you set the shaggy up for flank charges he becomes more terrifying because then you get the +1 cr for flanking and deny the enemy his rank bonus. The giant I find is way to random to be reliable against elves since most of the giants abilities can be bypassed with a high initative. The shaggoth is scarier for me to deal with mostly because of its speed plus it scaly skin give it some protection against my repeater xbows.

I would note that everything US5+ is scarier in the flank ..........
Well glad to hear the shaggoth is being run by people, always nice to see less taken stuff rock the table I still say he's quite overcosted, but clearly not worthless apparently, just more subtle than some (abominable / multi-headed) monsters

Yeah, every us 5 is scary in the flank, just find with the shaggoths extra movement its easier for him to pull it off than the giant
