The Space Wolves have always been close to my heart (with the Ragnar series being the first 40K novels I ever read) and after years of collecting plastic, reading blogs, and reading novels, I've finally gotten myself to put together an army. I have never played a game of 40K before.

A friend of mine has about 1200 points of Nids and we're going to have a friendly game in a few weeks and I'm trying to decide what to field. I know that he'll field a Hive Tyrant in some form and that he's trying to put together a Mawloc and/or a Tervigon.

I've read the rulebooks and read battle reports, so I have a vague idea of the application of the rules, but it's all very theoretical. I've put the list together from reading blog posts, other lists, battle reports, etc.

Any thoughts, comments, or ideas would be appreciated!

Here is the list I've come up with at 1200pts (actually, 6 points leftover).

Rune Priest (100+10)
- Chooser of the Slain
- Jaw of the World Wolf
- Living Lightning

- Combi-Melta
- Powerfist

Troops: (435)

- Razorback (HB)

Seems pretty legit dude. From what I am seeing, it looks very geared towards beating 'Nids, which I assume you want to do from reading your post.
One thing to work at in the future is building a good balanced list that can take on multiple armies, and practice the hell out of it.

A few things:

1. Normal lists go in series of 250 points so 1250 is more commonplace than 1200 (There are of course outliers and if a common game is 1200pts at your store then by all means go for it)
2. You will find a lot of people dislike when you tailor your list, obviously you'll take a few different options for swarm armies vs. MEQ, but in general I'd say try sticking to a core list instead of tailoring it
3. Take EVERYTHING on the internet with a grain of salt, and play some games first before you swap everything around. Every person has a different viewpoint of what the list should look like, so my advice is to play with something you think will work and then you can change it around to fit your play style better. (I did this when I first started playing by not gluing any heavy weapons down, turrets, etc.)

Now for your list, since it's geared towards nids I will try to help. I have never really been a fan of the Razorback spam lists, I usually keep my GH's in squads of 10. In general I have found this to be more effective for me, however if you want to take Razorbacks it's viable. I think that Chooser is not really something I use that much, so I would drop that and just take Jaws on your RP. Also if you want to save some points you can drop the Wolf Guard and just take P Fist/Combimelta in the normal squads. You may also want to think about taking out the Land Speeders in favor of Whirlwinds, the blast templates clear out hordes quite nicely. The last things I see, especially if you're playing nids is to take a LC and twin linked plasma gun sponson on your Razorbacks. This allows you to have two weapon destroyed, as well as the plasma gun for when anything gets close.

This is just my two cents though, and like I said take it with a grain of salt, YMMV

So to make this a more all-comers list, what sort of things would I be looking to change?

While I was shooting for 'Nids, it seems like this wouldn't be a bad all-around list either. Maybe swapping out the weapons on the speeders, switching from a Heavy Flamer to an Assault Cannon or something like that.

I'll be switching out the TLLCs on the longfang razorbacks to the LC/TLPG combo.

Thanks for the thoughts guys!

I've been playing Warhammer 40,000 since 1988, and am just coming back from a bit of a 10-year hiatus. And please excuse any wild accusations, hallucinations, or outright factual errors, as I am recovering from a serious head injury. And Warhammer 40,000 is part of my therapy. OH YEAH!

Go with Typhoon speeders if you can find the points. They can rip up hordes, MCs, and vehicles easily

Also, I don't see how this list is tailored. It looks like an all-comers list to me. Melta weapons would not be the ideal choice against nids because they have 0 vehicles.
