I am currently playing 40k as was pressured into it at my local game store because at the time nobody played fantasy, however with an exponentially grown fanbase I am yet again looking at the beutiful celtic feel i have when a dee the wood elves, so i need some help answering the following questions.

Are they in any means viable?
Are their models becoming rarer because i wanted eternal gaurd and it told me to mailorder which i can't there, is it the shops fault or GW's?
Can you suggest me a relatively competitative list?
what faction can otherwise capture a bit of that mystic celtic feel?

The fault is GW's, as Eternal Guard are metal models and, well, no finecast version for them yet.

They are viable, but are very prone to failure. 8th edition, with random charge ranges and other such things, really screwed over Wood Elves. No longer can you see a block of Dwarf Warriors and say "They'll charge me when they're 6" away." Now it's "It could be anywhere from 5" to 15." Same with Cavalry, though to a much lesser extent. They are very much an army that needs to be played well, and I'd go as far as to say for a first army not really the best choice.

Course they're MY first army, so take what I said with a grain of salt. I did win my third game of Fantasy against Skaven with my Wood Elves. Course that was a lucky Dweller's spell, but we'll leave it at that.
