hi all i recently decided to maybe start a fantasy army next to my (megaawesome) marines and knights
I was browsing trough the armies and there are two amies i like, empire and ogres. empire because i have a soft spot for the 'good' guys.. also in 40k
but the ones i liked the most are ogres, why? they don't need a lot of models to make quite a lot of points and the minis are freakin' awesome really epic and bloody and everything you want and its good because i prefer spending a week to paint one mini to a relative high standard then painting 10 minis a week with a low quality.. i love to put detail on my minis (check gallery if you like, but remember i'm no pro at all )

so is it a good idea to start ogres? i don't want to loose all the time (bit of a sore loser ) and i have limited funds (so no hordes)
are they a bit competitive and payable?

go or no go?

thx.

Ogres are a very strong army right now IMO. With their new book they have a few very competitive builds

Ogres are very good right now. They have a lot of flavor. And they make people get in their bellies.

More than I care to count >.> though I doubt you'll stay at 2000 points for long, fantasy is really meant for 2500-3000 pt games (IMO), 2500 pts certainly seems to be the most common games size around here.

2500 is the best size for WHFB IMO and ogres can get there fairly easy with mournfang and ironblasters

oo yeah i'm thinking in 40k points.. in 40k a 2000pts army is pretty decent.. i'm aiming at the common size so probably 3000 i don't see a lot in gnoblars actually more in iron guts, a butcher, some reg ogres a stonethooth and nice big chunk of mournfang i love 'em already..

Ogres are a tough customer. Depending on your build you just have to watch how you position stuff so they dont lead a real expensive unit away from the fight.

The enemy of my enemy is a bastard so lets kill him too.

Ogre Kingdoms are a great army if not a bit tricky. They have some builds that will just eat up enemy armies like delicious cake. However positioning is very important with this army

Gnoblars are good because you can take 50 of them for 125 points lol. Send them in as a tarpit to allow your other units to flank around, etc. Most times you will want more ogres though.

The models alone are worth it imho. Two battalions plus some extras give a lot to work with for cheap in comparitive GW levels. Build an army standard bearer from the box, get the nice and cheap Scibor Slaughtermaster, two boxes of Mournfangs and an Ironblaster for a start for example. This would give you, depending how you build it and equip your Slaugthermaster and armystandard bearer, 2500 pts. already.

Playwise I wasn´t able to to do a match so far but they seem to do fine enough.

This, basically. In the right circumstances, the Big Fat Fatties can make everything in their way look like, well, small easily-broken toy soldiers.
However, in the wrong circumstances they can collapse, as they're not great in terms of numbers.

Waaagh! Gorskar = 2050pts
Iron Warriors VII Company = 1850pts
Fjälnir Ironfist's Great Company = 1800pts
Guflag's Mercenary Ogres = 2000pts

I think most will agree they certainly are a very "playable" army for WHFB. I also think it's important to mention, since you mentioned cash, that the ogres are one of, if not THE cheapest army to get rolling in fantasy. Their battalion is a steal in what you get for the value.

If you want an idea of how many models you may need for a good solid Ogre list here is one i'm taking to a 2500 point tournament in March(Bay Area Open)

Lords
Lvl4 Slaughter Master(Lore of the Great Maw(Crown of Command, Armor of Destiny, Ironfist)373 pts You can get this by either converting a regular Ogre into a SM or you can get the actual character model

Heroes
BSB (HA, Standard of Discipline) 149 pts
Lvl2 Butcher(Lore of Beasts(Hellheart) 185 pts
Lvl1 Butcher(Lore of Heavens(Dispel Scroll) 125 pts

Basically the same as the SM. Either kitbash from a regular ogre or buy the character models(Note: there is no BSB model so you will have to scratch build your own)

Core
9 Bulls (Ironfists, Full Command) 318 pts a Battalion plus 2 boxes of bulls will get you this many Ogres
9 Bulls (Ironfists, Full Command) 318 pts
6 Ironguts (full command, Banner of Eternal Flame) 298 pts a battalion will get you these guys

Special
Sabretusk 21 pts 1 pack of Sabres will get you 2 of them
Sabretusk 21 pts
4 Mournfangs (IFs, HA, Banner bearer, Bellower, Dragonhide Banner) 350 pts 2 boxes of Mournfangs here

Rare
Ironblaster 170 pts 2 Ironblaster/Scraplauncher boxes
Ironblaster 170 pts

2498 pts

Theoretically, if you scratch built all your characters, you could make the above list with a Battalion Box, 2 boxes of Ogres, 1 pack of Sabretusks, 2 boxes of Mournfangs, and 2 Ironblasters. You get the Characters by making the Leadbeltcher bodies into your characters instead of Leadbeltchers. There are plenty of extra bits to do this in all of the above boxes.

Up 3 supporting attacks is pretty huge. You can get a significant number of above average strength attacks, from a single unit. With a horde this gets even better.
