I was recommended shields for my black orcs here. 4+ shooting save plus a third melee combat option sounds interesting enough. My problem is that first Black orcs dont get many shields, four in a pack of ten; secondly black orcs dont rank up easily without shields, with is gonna be difficult.

So what to do?

Options include:

The Enchanted Drum
My Black orc musician has a magic drum that adds +1 save at the cost of 1pt per black orc in the unit.

Gots what the boss's got.
Model the unit champion and standard bearer with shield, now they all have them. As its only the command.

Fiat
They got shields ok.

Glue shields on.
And number all the bases and pray I they all fit.

Dont bother.
Its all a waste of points because.....


I am not interested in a poll, I prefer actual posted answers, raw volume of opinion doesnt count much IMHO.

I use shields against shooty armies but against armies like WoC I don't go with shields. I hope that answers one of your questions.

About the shields on models - don't worry about it. Every Black Orc are equipped with two choppas and a great choppa yet you only see one option on each model. But if it really bothers you I would probably use the regular Orc Boyz shields and put them on their back.

It doesn't bother me, it might bother opponents.

Can you see any reason to use shields in melee when you have two choppa or great weapon. Most opponents would require one or the other, normally the great weapon.

If shields are not really needed at all in melee then the Enchanted Drum +unit pts sounds best to me.

Actually, yeah. Sometimes I even use shields and HW in combat. There are times when i'm up against a lot of enemies and I want the Black Orcs to survive as long as possible so that my Night Goblins can attack the enemy unit in the rear or flank. Heck, sometimes I even use shield and HW against Skaven slaves just to make sure that I won't lose that many expensive Black Orcs to 2pt trash.

But really, don't worry about the shields. No one will point it out.

I agree you're probably pretty safe from TFG bothering you about the lack of actual shield models. Fit whatever ones you can and don't worry about the rest.

I usually mix it up. Some actually holding shields and some have them on their back - examples can be seen in my gallery.

My local group and gaming buddies have a simple agreement that issues like this are presented prior to the game. If you need a "counts as" condition it's no prob as long as you have paid for it on the list. No-one likes playing with a tight@$$, it dtracts from the whole game. Just my 2 cents.

Just get basic orc shields and slap them on the back of the Blorc

I saw a unit where shields where put on the bases, and the orcs where standing on them.
The guy said that they just dropped the shield to pull out that extra choppa/great weapon. Don't worry, they will pick them back up if you shoot at them.

You might try just gluingf the sheilds on their backs so they would be out of the way... did that with some of my saurus

Dont worry so much about wysiwyg, just identify the unit to your opponent to let him know what is going on. Put shields on some but dont be too worried about it.

However I am not saying full on proxies are fine (a goblin is not a giant) but dont feel so uptight about that kind of thing in fantasy as many players get in the 40k community.
