You would have to use the normal Space Marine Codex, or one of its similars (such as BA, SW, DA or BT). However, Grey Knights are 1: unique and don't have codex kit, and 2: might have little pieces of awesomeness show up in the Codex Chapters (for example, the wrist mounted stormbolters can't just be Grey Knight, and those Nemesis Force weapons could really be anything power related).

Many and varied forces in progress according to waxing & waning whims.

I may never finish an army in my life.

So for example i would like my chapter story line to be something like, they were originally going to be a grey knight brotherhood but couldnt for some reason ( will make up later) so they were forced to make they're own chapter so now they are a mixture of a space marine and a grey knight. So am i able to do that and combine the weaponry and armor to a reasonable extent?

I used to hear all about "my chapter this" and "my army's background story that" when I played at the local GW store. I think it is just something that the red-shirts are trained to push as part of the 'sell'.

Since switching to an Independent Game Store, "chapter story" is seldom discussed, if ever at the FLGS. For a RTT, our TO has said he'll give a point or two for cool fluff as part of your "painting" score, but that rarely happens.

Buy the GK codex and run a "GK army". Use a GK specific unit or two like Pallies or Purifiers with GK toys (psy-cannons and such) and then run a unit or two that is stripped down, just power armor and bolters to represent your basic 'spehss muhreens."

I think people keep over looking your questions, No a grey knight army can't have normal space marines in it unless the person you are playing is fine with it. Each codex is the rules for the army that goes with them. Space marines can have any thing that is in there book, but can't take units from another book. They stopped the use of allies a couple of years ago.

As for the models, If you like the look of a certain model, lets say a grey knight terminator, you can paint and use that model in a space marine army but you have to use the rules for a space marine terminator. So you could in theory play the army you want, but you might have to use the rules for another army.

If all you care about is what your models look like and not the rules that effect them, than yes you can pull it off and use the back story you want to use. Like wise you can play daemon hunters and use space marines as grey knights, but you would have to use the rules for grey knights. If you get what i am saying.
