as I was reading through my codex, I noticed that a command squad does not have to be attacked to the captain that unlocks them, which led me to think about how I could incorperate that with my salamander army, mostly because I love the models, and the idea of a feel no pain vulkan is a little scary. What really determines if I follow through is whether or not they are viable.
What are your guys' thoughts on command squads?

Unless you're taking a Captain in addition to Vulkan, Vulkan cannot take a Command Squad. See the entry on pg 132.

sorry forgot to mention that id unlock it through the lysander/sternguard combo. not worth buying a captain if I am not going to kit him out.

Your list will also have a command squad, presumably all with melta-guns, and a sternguard squad, again, with multiple combi-meltas and the obligatory 2 tactical squads?

I don't see what the command squad is going to do for you that the Sternguard with combi-meltas won't.

Seems like a short ranged and elite list.
