I've searched around and didn't see anyone else had mentioned this but I've just finished reading my copy of the Weekly and was intrigued to see the Squats (and Beastmen) mentioned in the little background section they have for abhumans. I guess this is probably just GW teasing us but, with all these dataslates and limited edition figures and the like they are producing lately I did wonder if maybe, just maybe, they might do the unthinkable and make a new squat model or two for use with the Guard?

Squats are listed as Abhumans Iin the back of the 6th Ed rulebook in the appendix with all the fluff. I wouldn't read into it too far.

Part eldar, part human, and part cat. Seems legit.

They haven't re-recognized the half Space Marine/Eldar character yet though.

Just in case someone is curious, this is the full entry on WDW11:

The Future of Humanity.
Spoiler:
By the 41st Millennium, the human race has diverged somewhat, spawning countless variations across the galaxy. These people see themselves as totally normal, but to the eternally paranoid and suspicious Imperium, they are abhumans; to puritans they are nothing short of Chaos spawn fit only for extermination, but to the Administratum they are classified as sanctioned aberrants who may yet have a role to play within the Astra Militrarum.

Ogryns are the largest of these abhumans, stinking brutes evolved (some might say devolved) to survive on the primitive high gravity worlds they come from where brute strength counts for more than intelligence. Their size and willing obedience makes them ideal shock troops for the Astra Militarum.

At the other end of the spectrum are Ratlings, who make for very poor troopers indeed. However, when they’re not eating themselves sick, drinking intoxicating liquid or procreating uncontrollably, they are surprisingly good with a rifle. It’s in this role that they find employment within the Astra Militarum, sniping enemy commanders from afar.

Squats are one of the less seen abhuman races. Short, muscular and bearded, they are stubborn warriors with a gift for tehnological gadgetry. Having suffered greatly at the teeth and claws of the Great Devourer, their fate – indeed, their very existence – now appears uncertain indeed.

Genetically stable but bordering on heretical are Beastmen. They are viewed with suspicion by the Astra Militarum and their regiments are always kept segregated from the main army, often deployed in the vanguard of suicide assaults…

Closely related is another entry:
The Human Factor.
Spoiler:
While there may be countless abhuman variations across the galaxy, even those classified Homo sapiens have evolved. People born on Cadia, for example, all have violet eyes, a symptom of living so close to the Eye of Terror, while the men and women of Valhalla have lived for so long in sub-zero conditions that they can survive even the harshest weather. The Death Korps of Krieg, it is rumoured, field cloned warriors, prompting them to never remove their gas masks, while the warriors of the Mordian Iron Guard have pale, almost white skin on account of their homeworld, the habitable side of which lies in perpetual darkness.

I really like these little fluffy things on WDW. They are tantalising small though.

Hope we get some Beastmen & Squat love... the setting really needs more variety.

They never take off their gas masks? Hoo boy, they better not start growing beards then.
Also, if they never take off those masks, they probably are all Alpha Legion operatives...

In a novel called Dead Men Walking (by Steve Lyons), one of them take off his mask. He is pale, really young in spite of being a veteran (about 16 or something), and he is unable to convey emotions with his face. He is not happy without his mask. Oh and they do not have names, just a number. Grimdark all the way.

What I don´t get is the Mordian = pale-bordering-on-mutation thing. They looked average in most art I know:

The second image is official. I am not sure about the first, but it is absolutely brilliant.

I think that first image if from FFG's Only War RPG book, and I agree, it's a great piece of art.

In the latest codex, while I skimmed past the fluff, I saw the mordian soldier had what appeared to be a burnt face. It didnt look very natural but yea he has some wierd rash thing going on there. So it could be a new thing who knows.

Just look at the average basement dweller (grab a mirror). Also, very, very pale. Now, get out of the basement (or off-planet) and fight a week or two in the sun. Instant regular skintone!

It's all these tiny little teasers about the 40K universe that make it such a fantastic setting, IMO. FFG did a great job doing similar with the Dark Heresy and Rogue Trader books; lots of little lines here and there that open up tons of possibilities for roleplaying adventures.

On that note, does someone already make Beastman guardsmen, or am I misremembering? I could have sworn that Victoria Minis does something along those lines.

They totally do. As well as penals and female (ar)cadians. Very nice sculpts. To bad that a lot of smaller companies have to use prices in the same range as GW in order to be profitable, due to the smaller production scale. If you can only hope to sell 100-200 kits, it's an entirely different calculation from selling 10.000-20.000 kits, but its not making things better for the buyers.

It was the little line about technological gadgetry that got me wondering. I have seen people on various forums complain about GW adding in new kits by shoehorning them into the background to make it look as if they were always present. Personally I don't have a problem with that but perhaps the studio have finally found a niche for the Squats?

They couldn't make them work as an army so they scrapped them and came up with the idea the Homeworlds had been consumed by the Tyranids. Now though, the remaining Squats could well have been forced to integrate with the rest of the Imperium bringing their warmachines with them or coming up with new ones, ergo, new kits which bypass all the usual background problems.

A farfetched theory most likely but I can see the potential in it at any rate.
