Exposition:
I've been showing a new player the ropes. We talked about flank and rear charges, and his confusion made me remember a situation that came up when I first started playing Warhammer.
I was playing Skaven. My opponent was playing Vampire Counts.
My opponent was down to one unit, which included their Vampire Lord. I still had several blocks ready to go. So, due to my inexperience and my assumption that the game would, in this situation, follow basic logic, I charged into the front, flanks, and rear of this unit. I caused a few wounds, he caused a ton, I got some extra CR for my flank and rear charges, but, of course, still lost, and proceeded to make break tests for my 6 units.
Now, of course, I realize I'd have been better off charging him just in the rear or some other such tactic, to limit the attacks he can make.
This line of thinking makes absolutely no sense, of course. Why would sending in 4-5 times as many troops be a bad idea?
Just wondering if anyone else has thought about this sort of thing.
Concept:
I'd consider letting players rack up static CR for each flank. Maybe play around with a benefit to having multiple banners, lots of ranks, etc. I mean, if I outnumber you enough to completely surround one of your units with 4+ of mine...well, it wouldn't come up very often. And 4 units of 20 Skavenslaves charging into all sides of 18 Ogres are going to lose by a lot, even if they get +4 for charging, +2 for flanks, +2 for rear, and up to +3 per unit for ranks. Obviously that's a worst-case scenario; 4 small blocks of terrible troops versus a huge block of good ones, but I don't think there'd be many instances of said Ogres being surrounded by Chaos Warriors. And even if they did, they'll be in trouble without any of the above considerations.
Idle musings, s'all.
