I believe its just for 27/05/14 updates. Nothing special. Just means you can actually use your codex without having to flit between the new rulebook and the codex.

Haven't finished downloading these yet, so I can't comment on the content, but the big 'crimes' with 7th edition and the digital editions of the codexes were really:

A) The rules pop-ups in the digital books still contains the rules from 6th edition, which is naturally problematic especially as some of the changes between 6th and 7th are so minor that people may not even realize it when they're looking at the old rules pop-ups.

B) GW for some strange reason went through and removed a bunch of errata that was in the 6th edition FAQs from the 7th edition FAQs, but those changes had already been incorporated into the digital editions of their codexes. That means right now people using the old print codexes combined with the 7th edition FAQs have one version of the codex and people using the digital edition of the codex combined with the 7th edition FAQs have a different version, and nobody knows which version is 'right'. It doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure out that this is a terrible, terrible situation for all players.

For the record, here were the errata removed from the 6th to 7th edition FAQ transition that were already incorporated into the digital editions of these codexes:

Blood Angels:
• errata removed: Descent of Angels…does entire unit have to have the special rule in order to benefit benefit from it?
• errata removed: Hellfire rounds…are they Str X or Str 1?

Chaos Space Marines:
• errata removed (this is more of just a note, as the change was never added to the digital edition that I can find): Can Abaddon be turned into a Spawn/Daemon Prince or not when rolling on the Chaos Boon chart?

Dark Angels:
• errata removed: Stasis anomaly (and vast stasis anomaly). Not sure what the errata did (added the reduction minimum of 1, maybe?).
• errata removed: Powerfield. When embarked does it only affect the vehicle or not?
• errata removed: Land Raider Deathwing upgrade, can it be taken on a non-dedicated Land Raider or not?

Grey Knights:
• errata removed: Condemnor Boltguns…is the Perils caused by a hit or unsaved wound?
• amendment removed: unyielding anvil…is adding the word ‘troops’ in that rule supposed to be able to confer objective secured or not?
• amendment removed: titan’s herald…does it apply to any BB joined IC, or only ICs from the GK codex?

Necrons:
• errata removed: Solar Pulse…does Imotekh’s Night Fighting that is cancelled by a Solar Pulse stop his lightning strikes or not?
FAQ removed (just a note as this was never included in the digital edition, but is a big deal): Night Scythe Invasion Beams…are units able to re-embark on Night Scythes?
• errata removed: Imotekh’s Hyperlogical Strategy…does it apply against any army that has any Orks, or only if they are the primary faction?
• errata removed: Nemsor Zahndrekh’s Adaptive & Counter Tactics…are Acute Senses tied in with the Night Vision choice or not?
• errata removed: Vargard Obyron’s Cleaving Counterblow: Do enemy attacks that occur on the same initiative step apply to this rule or not?

It is interesting that all the updates that have come through so far, besides the BA codex, have been books that don't have any huge glaring discrepancies between the digital version and what GW did when they removed a bunch of errata/amendments from their 7th edition FAQs.

I can't wait for the BA codex to finish downloading so I can see if GW even figured out that they have discrepancies between their digital edition and their print codex or not.

Okay, BA codex has finished downloading....and it is official, GW has no idea what they are doing when it comes to their FAQs vs. their digital codexes.

From the 6th to the 7th edition Blood Angels codex FAQ, they removed the errata that changed the Descent of Angels rule so that every model in the unit had to have that rule to benefit from it, and they removed the errata that changed the Hellfire rounds from SX to S1.

Now, they've updated their BA codex for 7th edition, and both those errata changes are STILL IN THE DIGITAL EDITION.

So that means anyone using a print BA codex plus the 7th edition FAQ has one set of rules, and the people using the digital edition of the codex have a different set of rules, which is NOT COOL.

It also means anyone trying to believe that things 'changed' due to a clarification being removed from the FAQs between 6th and 7th edition is still stuck in limbo...which is the 'right' way to play? Do Dark Angel Powerfields that are embarked on a vehicle only affect the vehicle, or does the coverage project out of the vehicle 3"?

40K is in a terrible mess right now, IMHO. The promise of digital editions always having the most up to date rules has created a massive problem for GW because they can't seem to figure out what they've removed from their FAQs compared to what they changed in their digital editions.

Did they bother to "update" the ebook versions at all, or do only the ibook versions get this loving attention?

Looking at the ebook versions of those codexes in the ibooks store, it doesn't appear like the standard ebook versions have had any updates. But I don't know if that's because the ebook versions don't show update history like the ibook ones do, or it is because they just aren't updated.

To anyone who has bought an ebook version of a codex in the past, have they ever put out an ebook (not ibook) update before?

ashikenshin wrote:This sucks, I guess I will have to keep the FAQ pdfs on iBooks too.

But you see, that doesn't help anything.

Because the FAQs just don't have certain errata/amendments in them anymore, but those changes are IN the digital version of the codex.

So there is literally no way to know/tell which rules are different between the two versions (besides hearing about it online at a place like Dakka), which is why it is so problematic.

Yes, but they have been entirely stealth updates with no indication that anything was actually updated.

Did you buy your ebook off of itunes, or via their black library site? Because itunes ebooks (not ibooks) has a 'publish date' listed, but I'm wondering if/when they do an ebook update whether that date gets changed to the date they put out the update or remains as the original publish date?

Holee crap. I'd like to say that I'm drinking or something, but that isn't the case at all.

Not sure how I managed to mess up both the month and day originally, and then even more embarrassing is to go back and fix the month not even realizing I had the day wrong too!

Wow. I think I need a nap or something.

Well, your avatar is drinking, so does that count?

Anyway, checked my ebook codices, and didn't see anything to indicate when they were published (apart from the copyright year).

And they could at least list the changes in the version notes on the iBook store, rather than just a vague "updated for 7th edition" statement.
