So one thing I've been puzzled about and after a search of the forums couldn't find the exact answer I was looking for is how formations work now with the new detachment rules.

Specific example, since most formations are just a number of units making a special squad so to speak can that be formed out of an overarching detachment that it is contained in?

Say I'm taking the standard Combined Arms Detachment and take a total of say 5 Leman Russ tanks, can I then create the Steel Phalanx formation from the Damocles Gulf Warzone Supplement as it prerequisites is only to have 3-5 Leman Russes grouped together.

Lastly my other question is to the use of formations period, are they still only an apocalypse only deal or are they standard 40k now? My digital edition of the rulebook is a bit vague.

Thanks

A formation is not a special "squad" but a special "detachment". Models can only be a member of one detachment, so if you use Leman Russ tanks as part of a formation, they are NOT part of Combined Arms Detachment. You can take Combined Arms Detachments, Allied Detachments and formations in the same army. I'm currently building a Tyranid army that uses two formations, and a Combined Arms Detachment. Keep in mind, that the special rules for each detachment (formations included) only apply to the models IN THAT DETACHMENT. If you have a Combined Arms and a formation, the formation models DO NOT GET Objective Secured (unless the formations gives that rule to the models), but the models in the Combined Arms DO get Objective Secured. The only stipulation is that your formations and detachments all have to follow the alliance table rules.

You mentioned a formation in a Apoc expansion, so I would assume THAT one is an Apoc formation. The formation itself will identify when it can be used. Apocalypse formations are identified as such. There are formations in the Tyranid dataslates that can be used in 40K, and there is a formation in Sentinels of Terra that can only be used for Apoc.
