Just starting out and need some ideas or CC. I just picked up the army and fantasy game Thurdsay, so I'm Ork green so to speak.

Hq: vampire lord level 3 wizard. (Debating whether to have him on a steed or not)

Hero: necromancer level 2 , lore of vampires

Troops: x20 skeletons w spears and full command

X 20 zombies w standard and musician (vampire or necromancer here)

X 5 dire wolves

Special: either grave guard x10 or vargheists x3

Spirit host

Rare: not sure if I'll have room or if I should field a rare at 1000.

Thoughts? Any ideas for this fantasy greenhorn would be appreciated!

Hey man I'm real new myself so take any advice I give with a pinch of salt, but I'll share my opinion.

First off a lord at 1,000 is maybe a little overkill, especially combined with the necro. I'd go twin necromancer or one master necromancer and drop the vampire. If you want to keep him then figure out what you want to do with him because running your characters vanilla isn't really going to get the most out of them. In the few 1,000 point games I've played I generally go for one necro with lore of vampires and stick him in a zombie unit and just just nehek again and again, and another necro with death magic in a more fighty unit whose job is to try and snipe enemy heroes with spirit leech. Lvl 1 on both of them is my style, although a lvl 3 with vampire lore can be good because it's a powerful lore IMO.

I usually go two units of wolves for more chances of one surviving long enough to redirect or annoy.

10 Grave Guard won't last very long at all, bump it to 20 or don't consider bringing them.

I don't really like vargheist because frenzy makes them unpredictable, I'm a much bigger fan of crypt horrors because they stick around longer and still have a lot of hitting power. The models are cool though!

Spirit hosts are good I believe, I usually run bat swarms so I can't comment on them. Ethereal is a real pain at 1,00 points because the enemy has limited ways of coping with them.

Here's a reworked version of the list that I'd run:

Heroes:
- Necromancer level 2, lore of vampires = 100
- Necromancer level 1, lore of death = 65

Core:
- x20 skeletons w/ spears and full command (death necro here) = 130
- x20 zombies w/ musician and standard bearer (vamp necro here) = 70
- x5 dire wolves = 40
- x5 dire wolves = 40

Special:
- x3 vargheists = 138
- spirit host =45

All that's only 628 points, leaving you a large chunk to play with.

Thanks for the response.

I wasn't going to leave him vanilla, just waiting on the codex to arrive to see what the spells and stuff were all about. You're not the first to say go two necromancers, so maybe I should look into that.

I did buy a wight king model, really just because he looks cool. I hear he buffs black knights pretty well.

Speaking of knights... Would hexknights be worthwhile at this points level?

There's hexwraiths which are ethereal fast cav, and black knights which are your standard heavy cav, not sure which you're referring to. Hexwraiths are best left alone until higher values. I like black knights and wight kings, it's a significant investment but if you give them banner of the barrows (+1 for wight units to hit) and lances then they hit like a truck. PLus I'm a huge fan of their ethereal movement, it screws with opponent's deployment.

Hexwraiths. That's what I meant.

So here is the (ahem) reVAMPED list:

Hero: master necromancer (details to be hashed out later. ) lore of vampires

Lord: necromancer lvl 2, lore of death, again.. Extras if any to be hashed out later.

Core: 20 skeletons w spears, full command (necromancer here)

20 zombies w command (master necromancer here)

2 groups of 5 dire wolves

Special: spirit host

???? (20 grave guard, fell bats or vargheists.. Or black knights)

Rare: ????/none

Really need the codex to hurry up and get here so I can go in depth some more.

There's a pun you can really sink your teeth into.

Looks a lot more solid. Just remember that vampire count's core sucks, so expect good things only if they're supported.

at 1000 I would take a level 4 master necromancer. if you are going to use skeletons in your core master of the dead is a good upgrade so you can make more of them before combat.

I would take the 20 grave guard out of those choices because you can get enough bodies to keep them alive and fighting.

you could make a cheap vampire to help with combat rez in the grave guard unit and he gets you a second IoN.

or just put a wight king in the grave guard I like the fencers blades for him.
