Me and my brothers have started trying to play again. I have recently gotten my Nids up to about 2,000 points, fairly good team I think, and my brother has 1200 in Space Wolves and after watching us play he wants to start up as well....

Anyone who can I would just like a 1,000 point Astra Militarium (IG) Army that you think could possibly counter one/both of us... many thanks

He needs the codex. Needs to decide if he wants to tank spam, infantry spam. defend or push forward more. or a fair balance. Any allies or just AM? Is he trying to stay as cheap (money wise) as possible? Or does he have some extra to splurge?

Here you go:

Commissar Yarrick

He can man the Quad gun and he is a match for many big boys in a pinch and is your most combat capable leader. He doesnt give up Slay the Warlord very easily and in smaller games he is definitely a match for many characters that yo'll see. That he gives orders clinches it for me at this points level.

10 Veterans (Grenadiers, 3 Plasma Guns, Heavy Bolter, Krak Grenades)
Chimera (Multilaser, Heavy Bolter, Hunter Killer Missile)

10 Veterans (Grenadiers, 3 Plasma Guns, Heavy Bolter, Krak Grenades)
Chimera (Multilaser, Heavy Bolter, Hunter Killer Missile)

Better armor is really good. You have to have two troops choices and Veterans are an obvious choice for the points level. At larger points levels, Blobs start to make sense but at 1K, probably not. This confiugurationm puts a hurting on Nids and it has high Str shots to cause wounds to the toughest Thunderwolf Cavalry. Plasma guns will take out light transports and infantry alike and if Terminators show up, he'll thank you for suggesting them). Against Monstrous Creatures, the Veterans can strike with their Krak Grenades and those also are useful as thrown weapons, giving you one more STR 6 shot at close range. So really when the Wolves and Nids come barking, you're hittting them with 15 very high str shots! Thats nice. Add in the fire point or Chimera lasgun arrays and you have yourself quite the offensive weapon. If theres Land Raiders just change the plasma out for Meltas (though tactically it is often advantageous just to lure the contents ot the Raider OUT of it and deal with them then). A melta bomb on the Sergeant could also be an item you may wish to take if Land Raiders are actually being used at that level

Primaris Psyker (2nd level)
Primaris Psyker (2nd level)

These guys will not only help him DEFEND against your Psykers, but also make his Chimeras very dangerous using the Prescience Psychic Power. Remember that the Chimera guns can be fired also and imagine everything on there twin linked! Yaya! And who doesnt want an Instant Death weapon? Well how about two? You can even have them join Yarrick and form a unit for protection if need be.

Aegis Defense Line (Quad gun).

Flying Tyrants and other goodies will make it important for him to knock them outta the sky. NOTHING is more frustrating than having no answer to that problem. Its also useful against skimmers. The Aegis line itself will allow you to give escellent cover to the vehicles that are forming the wall of shooty death.

Wyvern(Camo Netting, Heavy Bolter, Hunter Killer Missile))

Wyvern(Camo Netting, Heavy Bolter, Hunter Killer Missile)

You have the high STR anti-tank covered so its time to look to more conventional; troops and their demise. These monsters are QUITE good, expecially when they have an Aegis to shield them and Camo netting adding on to that (and lord forbid it should be Night Fight)!!! Making them more dangerous is the fact that if there are no troops easily accessible to them YET in round 1, they can be your final attempt at First Blood using their Hunter Killer Missiles.

This list answers the call at:

Anti-Tank (Krak Grenades, High STR shots, Hunter Killers)
Anti-Horde (massive shot output)
Anti-MEQ (Plasma, Hunter Killers and again, voilume of fire)
Anti TEQ (Plasma)
Anti-air (Aegis)
Mobility

So in summary:
Commissar Yarrick
Aegis Defense Line (Quad gun).
Wyvern(Camo Netting, Heavy Bolter, Hunter Killer Missile)
Wyvern(Camo Netting, Heavy Bolter, Hunter Killer Missile)
Primaris Psyker (2nd level)
Primaris Psyker (2nd level)
10 Veterans (Grenadiers, 3 Plasma Guns, Heavy Bolter, Krak Grenades)
Chimera (Multilaser, Heavy Bolter, Hunter Killer Missile)
10 Veterans (Grenadiers, 3 Plasma Guns, Heavy Bolter, Krak Grenades)
Chimera (Multilaser, Heavy Bolter, Hunter Killer Missile)

Its 1003 points.

I think that this will not only be an excellent starting point for all the lists he'll build in the future but more than give the more advanced players a challenge to overcome and theres nothing more fun than seeing the new guy win and have fun. Just encourages them to keep playing more.

Thats actually a really good list. good points made as well. only possible downside I found while reading was wasting 40 points on hunter killers (only one shot, if you miss, theyre done) but then he fixed it with the psykers. so no problems! Its a little light on the troop choices, but youre taking a normal detachment, everything is scoring now. so it shouldnt be too much of an issue. Especially since the chimeras (if you decide to move them up) count as a troop choice as well. gives you an edge over an opponent who maybe made an unbound list. Just watch the close combat with these guys. both nids and wolves love to fight....guardsman love to shoot (unless youve got some nice buffs and a lot of bodies). I really like this list. well composed and thought through, and an amazing force to start an army with as you will put almost all of those models in every list you make. The exception being Yarrick because at higher points games he isnt always worth it.

Question: should the Wyvrns be squared? It denies an extra KP and it will most likely take both firing at the same target to kill it anyways.

How can the chimeras "join yarrick to form a unit if need be" ?

The Psykers and Yarrick can form a unit if they need to for protecting his Claw for the killing blows is what was meant. Plus Deny the Witch benefits.

I would not Square the Wyvern. It ablates "Extra" damage results and watses enemy firepower. Kill points are kind of a lesser issue with this size of game and in any event, if they can get past that 3+ save, good on the enemy for doing it.

and yes. Twin linked Hunter killers make the Chimera a tank killer as well as a great anti-personell killer and it gives you a way to REALLY start the whittling on those big monsters as they approach. Plus it instant kills Tough 4 models.

I thought you were squading the Chimeras originally, thats what confused me haha. I have an 1850 list i posted a couple weeks ago, would you consider taking a look at it and telling me what I didn't get right or could improve?

Wow, that's excellent. I am glad to hear it is going well. Losing ALL the time gets ya down and 2-2 for a new player is more than respectable.

Yay!
