OK. I've had a tough time. There is so much in this book I love. And so many formations in the champions of fenris book I love. So I can imagine I'll go apocalyptic on this army. But for now we are sticking to 1500 points. My primary opponent is tau. He runs a farsight list with farsight, 2 x 3 crisis suits, 2 riptides, 2 broadsides with HYMP and eldar allies with a farseer, 3 jetbikes and a wraithknight. (a little douchey in friendly games I know.) so I want to try and lay the hurt on him without spamming. I've come up with this...

HQ: Wolf Guard Battle Leader . 205 Points
1 Wolf Guard Battle Leader + Thunderwolf Mount + Runic Armour + Black Death + Wulfen Stone + Storm Shield

HQ: Rune Priest. 150 Points (Warlord)
1 Rune Priest + Mastery Level 2 + Armour Of Russ + Helm of Durfast + Psychic Hood

Troops: Grey Hunters. 235 Points
10 Grey Hunters + 10 CCW's + 2 Meltaguns + Drop Pod + Wolf Guard Pack Leader with Combi Melta

Troops: Blood Claws. 435 Points
15 Blood Claws + 2 Meltaguns + Stormwolf with Multi Meltas

Elites: Iron Priest. 105 Points
1 Iron Priest + Thunderwolf Mount

Fast Attack: Thunderwolf Cavalry. 370 Points
5 Thunderwolves + 3 Storm shields + 2 Wolf Claws + Power Fist + 2 Pairs of Wolf Claws

So the idea is the WGBL + IP run with the TWC. They should soak up a shed load of firepower and use LOS blocking terrain. They'll advance down a flank and when the time is right I'll probably separate the 2 IC's off and make use of the black death with the IP to protect him. The pod will drop in ahead of the TWC to distract, harass and dish out some wounds. The rune priest will join the blood claws in the wolf. Hopefully grab outflank and turn up turn 2 guaranteed. The rune priest will roll on biomancy. Hoping for iron arm and endurance with smite for free. Smite gaining ignores cover from the Helm. Iron arm and endurance making him the ultimate MC Hunter.

A point to note. The farsight list is my most common opponent, but not my only opponent. So I don't want to just tailor to beat him. That'd probably be really easy to be honest. So what's people's thoughts?

Any thoughts or suggestions? Perhaps even on how to run it against the suit army I will be facing....

So here is my thoughts.

Overall it is a decent list and fairly similar to what I have ran twice now with great success though the first game was 1850 and the second was 2000.

Starting off with the WGBL, that is the exact same build I use with the exception that I do not use Rune Armor. Rune armor is expensive for what it actually provides considering you already have the storm shield for a 3++. I would drop hit and use those points elsewhere (there is a suggestion for that below in the Blood Claws section).

Rune Priest is good and I have ran the exact same build though I would suggest dropping the Hood if you are fighting Tau, it's pointless against them.

The Grey hunters are good. Just be careful and make sure you support them as they will be dropping turn 1 all by their lonesome.

The Blood Claw unit is okay. I would drop the melta guns for flamers just due to the lowered BS of the Blood Claws. Plus, Flamers are great at softening up targets and clearing units off objectives. I would also put a WGPL in there with the points saved from switching to Flamers and equip him with the points saved from dropping the Rune Armor on WGBL.

Iron Priest . . . haven't tried it so can't really suggest anything. I just haven't found spending that many points on one as a good investment. Cool conversion ideas though (thinking full on metal cyberwolf)

TWC has way too many specials for my liking. Then again, I am a stock TWC player just throwing a couple SS's in there. I figure, with rending and that many attacks, plus the WGBL, should be enough. Most of the time, even that is too much and my TWC is a sitting duck from wiping the opponents unit. Removing some of those and the Iron Priest could give you a whole extra unit of Grey Hunters, Long Fangs, Ven Dread in Drop Pod, etc. Things that, IMHO, are better choices.

In any case, good luck with it, I would be interested in reading a battle report on who it functions. On a side note, I run my Rune Priest with Divination. That allows my Blood Claws to reroll to hit and, as with all two games I have played with the new rules, they also rendend with Misfortune. Just food for thought and take my suggestions as you will; I am still proxying my army with my Chaos models.

with the new wargear saying that TW gives an extra wound you could drop runic aromor and let the IP use his 2+ to suck up small fire, then use the WGBL for the invu. you know ur oppent so you can adjust them as needed.
i would consider the GH just cuase 1 unit in a pod tends to get eaten, so either bare bones then and use them as bait to get hte TWC closer or pick somehting other then DP. you could put the RP on a bike and he can roll with the TWC aperently thats a trick now...so yah thats kina horrfiing lol.
and let us know how eveything works out for you

i know weird combo just run with it

OK. I see some of the points here. Now I have increased the size of the TWC I can see merit to point saving. So I'd happily drop the two single wolf claws. That saves me a good 40 points. I'm not sure about dropping meltas of flamers... But I guess I can see a point. I know they're only BS3, but I can still see a merit to carrying them. What to do with those spare points though? I'm thinking perhaps some cyber wolves or something. Then perhaps upgrade to a blood claw pack leader... I could drop even more upgrades off of the TWC but I don't really want to....

The Flamers over melta's isn't just the BS thing. Maybe I should have explained better. The Blood Claws are not gonna be tank hunters, they are best at anti-infantry thus, 2 flamers supports that role much better. 2 BS3 melta shots may yeild 1 wound whereas two well placed flamer shots will yield much more. That's my reasoning at least.

With 40 points to spare, upgrade the Blood Claw unit to have a WGPL and give him decent wargear. I like wolf claws personally as the WGPL gets rage as well giving you 5 attacks on the charge. As I said before, I use divination on my Rune Priest so that is 5 re-roll to hit and wound attacks due to prescience and shred. It's worked stupid wonders for me.

Don't drop more upgrades than what you are comfortable with. I like mine more bare bones, you like yours more tooled up. It's about what is fun for you to do. I just want to make sure you are careful with it because a TWC winning and wiping out a unit is a "sitting duck" for your enemy to shoot at (which is the preferred method for any opponent to take on TWC). Just be careful choosing your fights.

Hope I have helped. Good luck.

It's less about winning fights... I'm thinking I'll be taking wounds on the storm shield/claw guys. And since that means they could die I can comfortably drop the claws now I have 2 other guys with dual claws. I'll keep the shield on the PF guy as he is unweildy. How much is dual claws on the pack leader? Is it the same as on the TWC? Because that seems a nice option.

I see your point on flamers, I may have to do that. I just need to scrape another 5 points from somewhere for a cyber wolf. It's either that or drop the psychic hood as well. But he tends to throw a farseer in his list for good measure, and if he attempts to nerf the rune priests unit then that defense could be worth it.

Lastly is the runic armour. I really don't want to lose it. If someone strikes before me it's normally an AP 3 weapon. Most ap2 is unweildy, so runic gives him that extra layer of protection for striking last.

The extra wound and the addition of Independent Character makes the Iron Priest pretty good.

And adding 4 Cyber wolves to him, then attaching the whole lot to more Thunderwolves is just sweet!

OK, I think the pack leader with dual claws is a good idea. And the upgrades cost the same as the two dropped claws. If I ditch the Meltaguns to flamers that frees up 10 more points, but what to spend that on?

Free up 5 more points and get a cyberwolf for the IP.

Give digital weapons to one of your Close Combat characters.

Or give out 2 melta bombs.

That's my suggestions for 10 points. Good luck.
