Although a Tau player now, I used to play Space Marines back in 4th ed, so I thought I'd try and get back into them a bit! I'm just starting small with this list. Any feedback would be appreciated

HQ:
Captain, storm bolter, lighting claw, artificer armour - 130

TROOPS:
1x sergeant
4x space marines, bolters - 70

1x sergeant
1x space marine, lascannon
3x space marines, bolters - 90

HEAVY SUPPORT:
1x predator, autocannon, sponson heavy bolters - 95

1x predator, autocannon, sponson lascannons - 115

Total: 500 points

Two Predators will be difficult to deal with at this points level. You will have to protect your troops but my main concern would be what the Captain is going to do. He's a bit expensive at this points level and he's going to have to walk across the whole table to do anything. I'd swap him out for a plain Chapter Master for the Orbital Bombardment (still kinda expensive), or a plain Librarian and three bikes.

Thanks for the tip, really I had no use for the captain so taking the chapter master instead for the bombardment would be great

Don't lightning claws work best in pairs? I thought I read that somewhere. Maybe cut back on the Captain enough to get a Rhino for one of the troops. That would give you more mobility if you do a Maelstrom mission.

I too am trying to put together a 500 point SM list. Sadly I don't have any Predators.

Good luck,
Duncan

They do as two gets you an extra attack, but one gets you AP 3 with shred and allows you to still have a shooting attack as well as saves you 15 points for the second one.

Lightning claws are specialist weapons, so only get an extra attack if paired with another specialist. If you are taking a non-pistol weapon (stormbolter in this case) you are not going to get the extra attack anyway, so you might as well take the claw over a sword. I’d recommend against paying points for a stormbolter these days, but pairing it with a LC is not a bad call. A combi weapon would probably serve you better though.

The list has mobility issues. But besides that, looks good. 500 point SM lists are to-taste anyway. It’s impossible to cover all the bases, so go with what you like. I think a low cost HQ might serve you better, and possibly swapping out one of the tac squads for some scouts. They can deploy with a variety of tricks to help grab objectives not in your start zone.

My 500 list formula normally looks like this:

Inexpensive HQ
10 man tac
5 man scout
<fun toy here>

I would still ditch the Captain in favor of a Librarian at Level 1. Take Divination, grab the re-rolling to hit Primaris and whatever random roll you get as need be and spend the remaining points on more marines and another special weapon in the other Tactical Squad. Sergeants can also take Combi-Weapons or Storm Bolters. Stick the Librarian with the Las-Predator to essentially twin link the big guns while the rest of them wander around and stomp. Rhinos are also an option with a 65pt HQ. that can be a lot of armor in a small list.

Drop the Captain to that Librarian, add a plasma gun to Squad A and a Combi-plasma to the Sergeant and mount them all in a Rhino and then spend the last 5 points on either a storm Bolter for that Rhino or some other tiny thing like that.

Vanilla marine librarians don’t get divination. They are still a good low point choice though.

That's correct I am thinking of a Rune Priest. My mistake. Some shifts to tactics would be needed then to buff whatever squad with psychic abilities as seen fit.
