I'm thinking of starting fantasy and made a few posts about this in the WHFB general discussion forum.

I've chosen wood elves and been told their tough to learn but I think they look cool and I'm willing to learn.

So anyway, I've written up a list to use as a good starting point and hopefully you can help me get the most out of it.

Shadow Dancer (100)

10 Eternal Guard (150)
-Shields
-Champion
-Musician
-Standard Bearer

5 Glade Riders (125)
-Glade Knight
-Musician
-Standard Bearer

5 Glade Riders (125)
-Glade Knight
-Musician
-Standard Bearer

I've just naively chucked everything on them so if anything's useless let me know.

Also I've been told Eternal Guard aren't that great but aesthetically their my favourite core so I stuck them in.

Advise would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I'd suggest dropping the Glade Knights and Standard Bearers from the Glade Riders, and instead get yourself Hagbane Arrows on the Glade Riders instead which leaves you 10 points left over.. Consider Trueflight or Starfire depending on meta.

Then finally drop the Champ from the Eternal Guard and grab yourself a Potion of Strength for 20pts, this makes her soo much more deadly its ridiculous to the point she will easily kill most other heroes if she pops her potion. That's 4/5 Ws 8 I8 S7 attacks which re-roll to hit, which averages out at 3 wounds at -4. Scary! Other then that, remember to bring your own forest and that forest *IS* a Venom Thicket to take advantage of poison, good luck.

Thanks!

So something like this?

Shadow Dancer (120)
-Potion of Strength

10 Eternal Guard (140)
-Shields
-Musician
-Standard Bearer

5 Glade Riders (120)
-Hagbane Tips
-Musician

5 Glade Riders (120)
-Hagbane Tips
-Musician

Wood Elves get a forest free right? I'll have to invest in one of those.

Is that "good luck, hope you do well" or "good luck, its gonna be hard with that list"? :p

Bit of both, assuming other people are starting new armies as well you should do fine, but if your playing against vets they will likely exploit your weaknesses. For example, turn 1, you only have a single unit on the board (!) due to Glade Riders Ambushing and that single unit has a 5+ save, you do NOT want a stone thrower landing on you. But as long as the enemy comes to you (which, if he is combat, he will. He has NO chance to catch the Glade Riders) and you meet him in your own turf, AKA a Venom Thicket the you should have a ball. 10 Poisoned Attacks re-rolling to hit and re-rolling 1's to wound + the Shadow Dancer is enough to strip a rank of even Chaos Warriors, although admittedly most of the damage comes from the Shadow Dancer.

It will be a fun list though, that's what matters. You have a combat ''block'', and 2 shooty units no one could possibly catch who will be able to chip wounds off of the tough stuff with poison. Forests are extremely easy to make for free, i quite literately chopped off a bit of tree, stuck it on a base and threw a wash of PVA glue to harden over it, stick a few on a larger template and BOOM! Forest.

For your next buy, you have two distinct choices. Wild Riders kick so much ass, as in, they do the most damage of almost any unit in the game for their points on the charge kinda kick ass. While Waywatchers are unlikely to die and can handle almost any situation, as well as being a massive F-U to Brettionian players. Either is a good next buy, Wild Riders takes you down a combat path, Waywatchers an avoidance path, choose wisely

Thanks for the advise

Sounds like they wont be too big pushovers.

What's the rule for ambushing? Will that be a big problem at 500pts?

The rule for ambushers is that from turn 2 onwards, you roll a D6 for each ambushing unit. On a 3+, they can move on from any table edge. Roll a 1 or 2, they won't come on but you get another go next turn. With a bit of luck you'll get both units on the board turn 2 but don't always count on it. I've had a unit delayed until turn 5

Ok, so like outflank in 40k but can arrive from any edge, that's cool

What do you all think of swapping the Eternal Guard for Wildwood Rangers?

If I change to the rangers should I change the lord or hero as well?

Shadowdancer is fine to support a combat unit. Rangers are a specialized unit, whereas Eternal Guard is more generalistic. Stick to EG for now.
