-...this is all the information we possess right now.

Eldrad stood silent. All the countless centuries of hard work with seemingly good results turned out to be in vain. He, the most potent living farseer known to the eldar race, has been outplayed by the ancient evil, festing on their very existance from the time of creation. The dreaded wave serpents.

A shadow ran across Eldrad's face and the aspect warrior, having worked as his agent for quite some time, knew it was a really bad sign. However, he was also aware of how 'strongly' Eldrad dislikes being interrupted in his thoughts and that's not really clever to annoy such a powerful individual. The farseer turned and slowly walked across the room.

The Old Ones sure knew how to achieve their goals. Their exceptional knowledge and cold-blooded determination led to creation of countless life species. But this very feats also led to brutally precise predetermined relationship between the species involved in one project. Orks - brilliant work, a true masterpiece of the ballancing immune system of the universe. They spend most of their time in stagnation of poorly organised bands fighting each other. But as the stronger outer power emerges, the orks organise and throw themselves at the incoming threat. They adapt and grow stronger but only as much as needed to oppose the foe. As soon as the real opposition ends, the mighty force falls apart and is reduced to warring bands once again but only until the new threat arises. However, to function, the ork society needs "lower" layers. That's a magnificently efficient but merciless coexistence of orks, gretchins and lesser greenskins. So was the initial design of eldar and wave serpent relationship.

Not many eldar suspected something and only a few really knew what was going on. It is always beyond the thought of the masses. They think they're just getting equipped and transported by their technologically advanced vehicle driven by exceptionally trained pilots. No. It's not that simple. This transport needs no driver. It goes wherever it pleases and transports whoever it wants. And IT chooses when and where they have to disembark and fight for their lives.

Eldrad rubbed his temple. It is as hard to understand the motivation of a wave serpent as it is impossible to imagine your own inexistence. They are just alien in the very core. But the news brought by an agent spoke clear. The wave serpents strive to reach their next evolutionary step. The knowledge of an ancient ritual so thoroughly kept in the black library - and it was the sole purpose of the library's creation to keep this dangerous knowledge secret - has escaped it's wals. The harlequins have failed. Wave serpents are now capable of creating their own avatars of Khaine.

Eldrad felt helpless. He stopped walking across the room and looked at the aspect warrior. This brave soldier would never surrender. Even though there is no chance of sucksess. His honor will cause his demise. So will the honor of the eldar race. Eldrad saw it all long ago. He did everything possible to avoid the upcoming disaster. Everything. But it still wasn't enough.

- You may speak, warrior.
- What can be done?
- Nothing - Eldrad shaked his head.
- But...
- Fool! - he interrupted the aspect warrior - You can't just stop a wave serpent. The only thing keeping them at bay has been the fusion technology. It was designed for this very task. And now we lose this last resort.
- But fire dragons are not the only...

Eldrad turned around putting an end to this pointless conversation. He knew perfectly well - they were all doomed.

If I may:

Fool! - he interrupted the aspect warrior - One does not simply stop a wave serpent. The only thing keeping them at bay was the fusion technology. It was designed for this very task. And now we lose this last resort.

I'm not entirely sure which side of the argument this is making fun of... or is it a Harlequin, making fun of both at the same time?

I'm not sure. Apparently a wave serpent sneaked past the harlequin guard hiding behind warp lampposts.

We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.
