Hello All! I am bored at work and engaging in one of my favorite activities... compusively building army lists. I have been a long time supporter of everything Alpha Legion, and have been struggling over the past year or so to get a list down on paper that would be fun to play, as well as adhere to the theme or fluff of the army. As it were, I sort of stumbled across this list and can't decide if It like it or not.

Chaos Lord (Alpharius)
Lightning Claws, Terminator Armour

Chaos Lord (Alpharius)
Lightning Claws, Terminator Armour

3 Terminator (Alpharius x3)
Power Axes
3 combi-meltas

10 Chaos Space Marines (Alpharius x10)
Champion with Power Sword and Melta Bomb, 2 Meltas
Rhino with Dirge Caster

10 Chaos Space Marines (Alpharius x10)
Champion with Power Sword and Melta Bomb, 2 Meltas
Rhino with Dirge Caster

10 Chaos Space Marines (Alpharius x10)
Champion with Power Sword and Melta Bomb, 2 Meltas
Rhino with Dirge Caster

5 Chaos Havocs (Alpharius x5)
4 Meltas
Rhino with Dirge Caster

5 Chaos Havocs (Alpharius x5)
4 Meltas
Rhino with Dirge Caster

Chaos Helldrake (umm... Bob?)
BaleFlamer

First off, everything is unmarked and carriers not icons. I know that this may make the army weaker, but that is more fluff than anything. That is also the reason why I have the two Chaos Lords rather than the lord/sorcerer or Daemon Prince. I am trying to play the legion as the covert, operates in the shadow guys that I have read about in deliverance lost and Legion. The rest of the army is all Rhino rush, a small terminator bodyguard for the two lords, and one Helldrake (though I plan on making this more like an actual shutter than a daemonic engine of war). This may be heresy, but my game group and I typically just pick our warlord traits as well. I like it in this respect so I can either make my warlord scoring, or do the sneaky Alpha Legion thing and infiltrate D3 infantry units. I am looking for critiques on how to make the army fun to play (my main opponent plays Grey Knights) but also in keeping with the theme. I have heard that Maulerfiends are choice, but trying to stay away from daemons and mutations. As always, thnak you in advance for any help or insight you can give.

Wow, just wow, your group lets you pick master of deception. So you think you can infiltrate 2d3 infantry units by taking 2 lords?

Yeah. I make compelling arguments. Add to the fact that I tend to play themed lists over competetive, and the only time I roll high is during leadership tests and I think they do it more so out of pity. But with the list below, I would give one of those warlords the master of deception trait and infiltrate (probably just one knowing my rolls) squad in. The rest will try to close in fast to make use of the melta guns and even the playing field. I am guessing that better players than I can wreak havoc on a game with that trait? The two lords is mostly just a nod to the twin primarchs.

If you had more points then I would protect the havocs better with 10 full bodies, and give them MoS to get IoE for fnp. That would be a pain to kill.

I would do it by dropping the 2nd useless lord, possibly the termicide, possibly the lone drake...Drakes are best spammed like dailymiddleborro use to at 500pts in 6th ed. I think he was able to fit 4 turkeys into a 1000pt list. He would just tell everybody to take 3 drakes or else it was not competitive. However, 7th ed changed very much the effectiveness of a drake. They have broken neck so they only shoot 45 degree arc from their face. Vector strike was weakened. Dont remember if they still had torrent on the bale flamer anymore.

If I was guarantied d3 units to infiltrate then I would definitely have 1 squad of 20 havocs with no rhino, MoS, IoE, with preference to 4 plasmaguns blasting 12" away hiding in cover or take 4 flamers and roast stuff that are hiding in cover.

If you can take 2 cad so that you can get 2d3 infiltrate, if it works that way, then I would definitely have 2 of those large fnp squads in the enemies face.

Otherwise if you have infiltrating in transport, then wouldn't they get outflanking instead? i recall someone correcting me that then get scouting instead.

If a unit is embarked onto a Dedicated Transport, they may either Infiltrate or Outflank.

In terms of Alpha Legion fluff, I enjoyed reading Legion from the HH series, and some of the shorter stories that involved the Alpha Legion against the White Scars and Space Wolves. That being said, there's a LOT of Alpha Legionnaires in your detachment. While it's not necessarily "against" fluff, it represents a huge commitment of forces.

I agree that the Heldrake could be dropped. It's a stretch to include a Daemonic engine in your army when you're not wanting to include others. Keep in mind, the Alpha Legion from the HH isn't necessarily the same Legion 10k years later. Some forces could operate from within the EoT and pull appropriate strings to use any asset and dispose of them when the mission is complete or risks coming into light. Your "Alpha Legion" army can also resemble loyalist Chapters or other traitors rather than the staple iconography and colours. Even the lives of their own Legionnaires isn't valued over secrecy.

The major concern I have is that your entire army consists of units that have the same role and limitations of short-ranged firepower. If I had the opportunity to Infiltrate units guaranteed, I would take Raptors, Warp Talons, or large units of CSMs as already suggested.

Alpha legion lists needs less csm and more cultists!!!

"The enemies of the Emperor fear many things. They fear discovery, defeat, despair, and death. Yet there is one thing they fear above all others. They fear the wrath of the Space Marines!"

The Warlord Traits that provide Infiltrate (in Codex: CSM and The Rules) apply to the army, not specific CADs. I would definitely have 1-2 (3 maybe) aggressive units to Infiltrate and push for an alpha strike.
