So continuing with the theme of specialized units within a larger whole, here's my experiment with IG-codex Militarum Tempestus. The fluff idea is that they're being deployed from high-up types and their cover on the ground is flak and artillery. Tactics wise, I think this one might actually be quite deffective; as long as I'm careful with placement, etc. I can drop a large number in range for basic meltagun hits (ie S8/AP1) since it's unlikely to scatter too far away from opponents. With the Officer of the Fleet, I can be relatively certain of getting at least 10 of twelve deepstrikers in, barring mishap, and drop them within 1" to 13" and probably more like 8" from enemies or important locations. Though in a matter of practice, the Tempestus Platoon Command Squads, with their longer range Plasma Rifles, will make for a better group to seize and hold objectives.

Meanwhile, backfield, the Wyverns should be focusing on shredding infantry while the lascannons take out tanks/MCs and so forth with the Hydra pounding out some decent anti air and has at least statistically a chance for 1.2bar S7 hits per round even if there isn't air to shoot down, thank you Twin-Linked. I _think_ that the 8 vets not holding the lascannons will be an ok, if thin, bubblewrap for the artillery (including their own heavy weapons teams). Speaking of widgy rules, does anyone know (a) if the Company Commander can buy Carapace Armor for 2 points? My impression is that he can't, it has to be full cost, and (b) whether or not the tank commander in the Steel Host has to be his own squadron or if he can be a part of the 3 mandatory-- ie, do we have a minimum of 4 tanks or of 5? I suppose there's also (c) can a Tank Commander accompany Pask or another Tank Commander to maximize BS in those squads but that seems a bit silly. I'll take it over to Da Call. Anyway, the list:

HQ
Company Command Squad
2 Plasma Guns
Vox
Med Kit
4x Carapace
1x Krak Grenade
Commander has a bolt pistol or possibly a bolt gun since this group should be avoiding close combat whenever possible
Officer of the fleet with laspistol
Chimera
Dozer Blade
Camo Netting
Total 225

Troops

3x Veterans
3x Lascannons
3x Forward Sentries Doctrine
Total - 270

Elites
3x Tempestus Command Platoon
3x Vox
3x Medi Kit
6x Plasma Guns
Total - 405

9x Tempestus Squad
9x Vox
18x Meltaguns
Total: 855

Heavy Support

Hydra
Camo Netting
Total - 85

2x (Separate) Wyverns -- these are separate "squadrons" rather a single squadron, so they can aim in different places.
2x Camo Netting
Total - 160

I half wonder if I shouldn't take out some Tempestus squadrons and upgrade the Wyverns to Basilisks, or to Manticores, but so far, given the proliferation of melta that can deepstrike close to enemy armor and plasma that can hit out, I think I have enough anti-vehicle. And the plasma should only be in places that not only have 4+ saves against Gets Hot, but has Feel No Pain as a back-up.

Having had some chances to plot this one out a bit, I've discovered both that it's actually -really- effective and that, despite the fact that I really prefer this as a 'guard' army, as opposed to an MT one, I have to come to grips with cold, hard facts: with the exception of the Ignore Cover bennie, the MT orders are overall more useful. Yes, I know, First Rank Fire, Second Rank Fire is technically more useful than Directed Firestorm Sanction-- for the hot-shot lasguns. But Twin-Linked is better for the meltaguns and the plasma guns (especially the people-burning plasma guns). That being said, using a Skyfire Nexus to burn down a jinker, or cut into a shroud on the ground or whatever, really benefits from Ignore Cover. So I thought about it for a bit, and realized that I could split things up a bit and get a little of both. I also debated having either actual air rather than just the Hydra and hoping, but I felt I needed deepstriker with a bit of extra heft more:

Primary Detachment: Inquisitors

Ordo Malleus Inquisitor I
Terminator Armour, Nemesis Daemonhammer, & Psycannon
3x Servo-Skulls
89

Ordo Malleus Inquisitor II
Terminator Armour, Nemesis Daemonhammer, & Psycannon

2x Plasma Guns
2x Carapace Armour

2x Veterans
2x Forward Sentries Doctrine
2x Flamers
Total: 150

1x Tempestus Command Platoon
1x Medi Kit
2x Plasma Guns

3x Tempestus Squad
6x Meltaguns

2x Camo Netting
2x Dozer Blade

I wish I could drop the Guard to 'allied', sadly enough, but then I couldn't take 2 (combining the Wyverns into 1 squadron) Heavy Support. I suppose I could drop the Hydra and one vet squad entirely, gaining 160 back, then buying a Valkyrie with some options, or poking around for 10 points more to get a full vendetta, but given the fact that there are going to be Quite A Few swooping monstrous creatures out there, having the Hydra on the board turn 1 seems like a good plan, if a thin rope to hoist hopes in that department on. I'm almost tempted to cut out some of the basic squads, say 3, and bring a vendetta after all, beef the inquisitors up to psykers, get an Astropath and put a Dozer on the Basilisk so if it needs to move, it can. I mean, I really do like having 18 meltas that I can dropstrike-- and dropstrike accurately with the servo skulls-- backed up by six plasma shots, but taking away 6 is still 12 BS 4 S 8 AP 1 shots, which will come in on the same turn roughly (especially with that sweet Tarot inquisitor warlord trait) as the Vendettas's 3 board-bisecting twinlinked lascannons. Hmm. And since the Guard are just staying put to guard the vehicles, an autocannon team for one of them isn't a bad idea. I guess the Hydra can still do without the dozer blade; add a second flamer to the other team and we're in business. Actually, that sounds better and better:
