I noticed that once anything goes Steampunk, all the nerds and neckbeards suddenly think its unique and creative even though it's been way overdone

Yes, I think Steampunk is overused. That being said, I still enjoy it.

No, I really don't think anyone is claiming to be creative by using it. It has become as cliche as zombies and post-apocalyptic settings in games. Nobody that uses these tropes think they're being creative.
