I've been fighting myself for a time now: a side of my brain finds the settings that GW do awesome. The other hate the company for it's pratices apparently completely against every fan they have. The GW games seem to me (a completely noob) that only veterans with huge armies get any satisfaction from it.

Even they, the old players, are apparently abandoning the game, selling armies and migrating to WARMAHORDES, MALIFAUX, INFINITY and other skirmish games.
Is there any of you starting now or at least, last year? Is it worth it to START 40K or WFB now?

I bought some Warmahordes/ Infinity and Malifaux. But I still keep reading about the universe and the characters of 40K and WFB. It ignites my imagination more than the other settings, and the prospect of big epic armies clashing really entices me.

So tell me, damnit: Is it worth it?*

If you enjoy the 40k universe, you could always stick to the novels and RPG.

Personally, I play Infinity and Malifaux for the gameplay. It's much tighter and much more fun. I still paint 40k on the side, but mostly as a side project. I wouldn't recommend 40k as a game. It's not balanced, the DLC is rampant, the prices are abusive, and it's overall not fun to spend half the game literally doing nothing.

Well yeah, but Epic has been officially dead for a while now. I don't play 40k because there's no itch that it scratches. Big epic armies clashing? I whip out my 6mm Dark Angels half company, or my Titan legion (you even get the fluff!). A 'close up' skirmish game? Infinity, or Deadzone maybe. 40k sits in this weird zone where it doesn't really simulate anything I'm interested in, so no, I'm not starting it.

“Good people are quick to help others in need, without hesitation or requiring proof the need is genuine. The wicked will believe they are fighting for good, but when others are in need they’ll be reluctant to help, withholding compassion until they see proof of that need. And yet Evil is quick to condemn, vilify and attack. For Evil, proof isn’t needed to bring harm, only hatred and a belief in the cause.”

Playing 40k without opponents is pretty lame and yes GW as a company can be really annoying but I play with at least 10 people who play 40k so there are people that play. Some are vets some just started playing this year I find that in the last couple years 40k has become a big thing (in my area)

The thing is try and buy minis from ebay or craigslist they are cheap and sometimes already put together. I am not gonna beat you over the head and say "play this damn game." Because the game isn't for everyone try playing some local games.

The last few folks looking to start 40k that came into the various FLGS I've been in have seen WM/H being played, checked some prices, and left with a battlebox.

YMMV, folks can and will have fun with 40k. Depends more on what folks are playing around you, I find.

No wargames these days, more DM/Painting.

I paint things occasionally. Some things you may even like!

Find a game that lets you work with WHF or 40k fluff, but has different rules. Plenty of people can point you to different games on here. Personally, I'd tell you Deadzone using SMs to count as Enforcers, IG as Rebs, CSM possessed/oblits as Plague, Orks as Orx. You can buy a box of your chosen team and have more than a playable squad. Others will suggest other games. Honestly, nothing is stopping you from immersing yourself in the awesome WH fluff while using the superior rules from pretty much every other company out there.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

There is a group around that collects 40K...Lots of painting, little gaming.

If you have some people to play with, by your units used online for minimal investment and enjoy. Adding to that, if your goal is to hang out with people and huck dice no matter the odds, the GW games are alright.

If you actually want to play a game, play anything else and don't waste your money or your time.

Well this is big, no reason to buy into a game that you have no player base to play with. If your wary of 40k, scope out what's actually being played and get a pulse of your options.

My fiance and I started 40k a year ago, and we've seen several new players in the past year, and we play at just one of the stores in town.

However, we're in the states, it's a large city, and there's quite a few FLGS that sell different stuff. As for wargamming, there's at least a community here for WHFB/40k and WM/H. There s a GT that only does WHFB and 40k.

A big part of the game may end up being the community that you have...

You may absolutely love and enjoy the 40k/WHFB models, but if you can't find anybody to play them with, it's not going to help you much. Unless you just want to collect and paint 'em.

I do not work for GW in any fashion. When I edit my post, either I've misspelled something, punctuation, or I'm fixing swearing. Oops.

Indeed, veterans with large armies find the game enjoyable.
A beginner needs to have a large wallet to build up an army and as said GW's way to deal with customers is not best practice.

Alternatively, you could start WMH.
Its a bit cheaper and PP's practice is much better.

Oh yes. Most of those also let you get away with fewer minis (= monies) per unit, unit footprint, or army. If you go the ebay route, it might not be too difficult to get a couple of small armies for demo purposes. After that, your biggest hurdle might be finding some gamers who don't mind giving any game a try.
