I need some help with a new Tau army. A friend of mine and I are going to a 500 point doubles tournament, he's taking close combat oriented Orks for aggression and I'm backing them up with supporting fire.

I think getting an XV-8 commander with TL plasma rifle and missile pod would be good for an HQ choice.

For troops I'll go with fire warriors and kroot. (just get a group of ten each, maybe sniper rounds on the Kroot)

And an elite of three XV-8 suits with TL plasma rifle and missile pod.

What do you think? - I know close to nothing of Tau right now.

As an extra note, I do not like the Farsight Enclaves. - Just stock Tau.

Commander is a little expensive for 500 point games I like to stick with Cadre fire blade or ethereal at low points level
What about:
Ethereal
2 squads of 10 fire warriors
A squad of 6 pathfinder
a squad of 3 missilesides one with target lock to use up points

Your teammate will be the assault force while you can be further back raining missiles (another idea could be cut pathfinder squad for another broadside and run 2 squads of 2) to bring your shooting phase to 16 s7 ap4 missiles from HYMP and 16 s5 ap5 ignores cover smart missiles along with all the shots from the fire warriors (keep them in ethereal 12" bubble and get into rapid fire Range with them for 3 shots per model from ethereal invocation of elements

Nice suggestion, I'd probably go with more broadsides rather than pathfinders.
