Virulent Space Marine dedicated to Nurgle

Hey all, not sure if this is the right place to have this thread so please let me know if it isn't, anyway, I recently just started WHFB with Warriors of chaos, and was looking for advice on how to build my army up from what I already have. I was looking to reach a solid 2000 points list if possible

Really, it was the Glottkin that inspired me to start, and now I want to build up my around a Nurgle theme, so here what I have so far:

Orghotts Daemonspew/Bloab Rotspawned

1 Sorcerer Lord, 1 Footslogger Lord and 1 Mounted Lord

10 Putrid Blightkings

24 Warriors

For the mounted Lord I want to add some Knights, but are there better options?
Are Warriors the way to go or are Marauders any good?
The Blightkings are my favourite models in the army and I definitely want to use them as much as possible, but I know they are points heavy, how do you guys think they work best?
Are there any units that are must takes?
is full command always necessary?
And lastly, can a Nurgle army work in semi to competitive play?

Any help is greatly appreciated

Firstly welcome to WoC! Next I wouldn't bother with the mounted lord, a foot lord and sorcerer plus the special character is plenty. Also Blightkings are very strong, but I would take 2 units of 5 as apposed to a massive brick of 10. Also Nurgle is considered the best mark in the WoC book, as for units that are a must take there are: Skull crushers (if you are playing pure nurgle don't bother) chimeras (they are glass cannons, get a side/rear charge and combo stuff to death). That is about it imo, the other stuff is just good.

Chariots are also very good for core, and Nurgle allows you a lot of great conversion opportunity for them. Marauders are a bit pricey for what they give you, so I would do warriors over them every time if you're looking for infantry.

Another option for a character to put in your warriors is use an exalted hero on a daemonic mount. Point for point he is better than both the lord and plain exalted hero (extra W, T, more attacks). You can throw on a charmed shield to save him from a cannonball (if someone decides to shoot him instead of your Glottkin chars for some reason). Plus, more great conversion opportunities if you're into that. You will also likely need a BSB and this guy can carry the banner for you.

I'd also recommend getting a couple units of 5 chaos warhounds. They make great, cheap charge blockers and deployment drops.

Full commands are generally necessary, yes. Sometimes it's smart to not take a champion if you're not using any characters in a unit so you can't be forced to kill only a single model with your champ. For 5-man blightking units I would not take a champ for this reason. Definitely want the banner and muso though.

I wouldn't say there are any must takes. Chariots and gorebeast chariots are great, skullcrushers have a huge damage output and survivability for their points, and chimeras are very powerful if a little squishy. But most of our options are pretty competitive. Even ogres, trolls, and dragon ogres can put out the hurt.

Yes, Nurgle can absolutely work in competitive play. It's is easily the best mark. I'm personally a Khorne guy, mostly for aesthetics, but the frenzy can screw you if you're not careful.

Cheers for the feedback guys, I was thinking I of actually getting some Skullcrushers and painting them up and converting them to look a bit more nurgley, and as for the mounted Lord, well I got the Nurgle one from GW and am thinking I could use him maybe as a mobile sorcerer Lord.

So as I'm new to the game in general, what does the BSB do for me exactly? And what are the basic rules for them? Can they be put into a unit as a character?

Also, I think that 2 units of 5 kings would be good, my first kind of introductory game I played had them in a big brick and they managed to beat down 40 Khorne Gors and a Bray shaman while only losing one, but the back rank didn't do an awful lot, so separating them is the way I think.

How should I deal with ranged units? It seems that most stuff in the WoC book is pretty slow and there's next to no shooting as far as I can see.

And lastly what is a good kit out for a sorcerer Lord? He needs a ward save for sure, but any other gear that you guys would suggest?

As to making a list from you have, if you grab a box of warhounds you'll be set with a pretty brutal list of Warriors of Nurgle:

Orghotts Daemonspew
Sorcerer Lord - MoN, level 4 (NURGLE), talisman of preservation, enchanted shield
Exalted Hero - MoN, BSB, scaly skin, dawnstone, halberd

22 Warriors - MoN, full command, halberds, shields
5 Warhounds
5 Warhounds

5 Blightkings - standard, musician
5 Blightkings - standard, musician
-------
1940+

I forget the exact points, but there's like 50 points or so for extra gear on the sorcerer lord - chaos familiar, magic weapon, flaming breath, etc - and/or magic banner on the warriors, or so on. It is a little on the slow side, but it's damn smashy once it gets there.

Also +1 for running a Maggoth Lord, they're not the most loved models, but I feel like there's a ton of potential there, particularly with the kind of hurt that Orghotts can put out.
