Been Around the Block

ok so ive been out of 40k for afe years now, never thought id come back but with recent releases that just made it harder, plus i like having models for games i like!!
now im looking for a begginer level force, something akin to dark vengeance but dark angels dont tickle my fancy and chaos space marines ive never been in to.
stormclaw and deathstorm i did like but unfortunatly didnt get a chance to pick up a box before they sold out, FORTUNATLY i can get some of the minis off ebay (the deathstorm characters paticularly i liked)
now i know most will say "pick one faction at a time and go from there" but i wanna be able to have begginer games with two for a freind who thinking about starting,
so as for the models in deathstorm is this a good way to start? or are there some units in the set i could swap for something abit more balanced?

I would wait a few months. There are reliable rumors of two different box sets coming in the next six months. Chaos vs. DA and Tau vs. SM.

Rule #1 is Look Cool.

Realistically, you need to pick the faction you want to play, rather than try to make it work using a bundle box.

Deathstorm is a fantastic value... but not so much if you want to play Necron or Tau, right?

One way to go is just buy the battleforce box of the faction you want to play. The value (compared to buying the models separately) is excellent, and most of the battleforces have all useful models -- as opposed to Deathstorm and Stormclaw, which are a phenomenal value, but have lots of models that nobody ever plays.

Then, just buy the mini softcover rulebook from someone... or ask nicely

'Straya... Mate.

Step One: Fall in love with an army
Step Two: Fall in love with HQ from That army. Buy him!
Step Three: Buy two squads of troops.
Step Four: Assemble and paint all of the above.
Step Five: Once Step four is complete, buy an Elite, FA and/or HS choice that you like.
Step Six: repeat steps four and five until you have lots of models. Maybe get another HQ as well.

Edit: I forgot to mention that your friend can do the same thing as you at the same time allowing you to do battles.

This. One very good option is to buy used models (or armies). Many of them are not painted and you can get 30-50% discount.
